Red Book states 2001 P half at mintage of 21,200,000 and not issued for circulation. If you add proof, mint sets you come up with 5.1 million. What happened to the rest of them? Thanks
They are sitting in vaults, just like the 100 million 2000 & 2001 Sackys that the mint still has, waiting to be called out by the Fed.
that is a mistype in the redbook. another person emailed that question to the publisher of the redbook, and they said it was a typo, so the 2001P halves were meant for circulation.
per the mint web site The 2001-p was never minted for circulation and only a small number of 2001-d were released in limited areas. That being said I too have found 2001-p halves in roll finds.
Kind of off topic here Doug but figured you might know. Wasn't there an "avalanche" of Morgans at the Philadelphia mint like in the late 1800s? clembo
Howdy cinman - Welcome to the Forum ! Not sure where you are finding this info on the mint's site but it is indeed in error. The mint absolutely struck Sackys for circulation in 2001, they did not however strike any for 2002 or any year after that.
Well, yes. But there was an avalanche of Morgans at every mint from the day they started striking them. Morgans dollars, every dollar coin ever struck for that matter, for the most part did not circulate. The vast majority of them sat in bank vaults for decades, some a century. And that is why it is so easy to find uncirculated examples.
Yes I am aware they struck Sackys in 2001. I thought from the thread title we were talking about 2001 half dollars. The title was 2001-p halfs for circulation. That info is on the mint site in the bags and rolls section for kennedy halfs. And they did mint 21 million of them and they are still sitting in the vaults waiting for suckers like me to pay to pay 32.50 :headbang: for a roll of p and d mint halfs..This is the only way I knew this info because as a newbie I layed down the cash for these and then went to Ebay and seen they were selling close to or less than that... Thanks again for the big Howdy!!!!! I am fairly new to this going on 8 months so these forums have tought me alot and I look forward to learning more..
I'm going to h have to do some digging here. I recall a story in one of the coin mags about a "literal" avalanche of Morgans. A vault was opened after years for inventory and bags had rotted. A "flood" of Morgans came at those who opened it. I do remember reading this but not the details. Don't think it's urban legend either.
Your misreading what it says I believe. What it says is this - " The United States Mint is opening the vault and offering never before released 2001-dated (P) Kennedy half dollars! To complete this offer, the United States Mint is including 2001-dated (D) Kennedy half dollars in the two-roll set as the 2001 (D) were only released in small quantities in limited areas of the country. " Now I can assure that you the 2001-P half was released before this because I bought them for my son who is a half collector. He still has them. The real misunderstanding is this - the phrases struck for circulation and released for circulation are two different things. Yes the mint struck the coins for circulation in 2001. However the Federal reserve banks in the east never asked for any coins from the mint because they had enough already so non were released into circulation. But if the Fed asks, they may be released tomorrow, next week, next year or whenever. Understand ?
It's not a legend, it's quite true. And that's what I was trying to get across with my previous post. The mint spent decades announcing sales and selling these coins to the public in the 20th century.
Yes I can see where I could misunderstand "never before released 2001-P" with "released" 2001-P .. " Now the collector can complete their sets" I can see where someone without the ability to purchase never before released coinage from the mint would be confused about the words "Never before released" The guy had a question about the half and I just repeated what I had read when I purchased these in April. And I can only go off of what I read on the mint site and redbook. It doesn't really matter to me if it was struck for ciculation or not. The point is common folk like myself didn't have access to these like apparently some people did. So to me it was uncirculated until the day the mint started selling them to common folk like myself.... quote=GDJMSP;293985]Your misreading what it says I believe. Apparently I did not make myself clear. The 2001 half dollar, both P & D have been available for purchase, every single day, on the mint's web site since early 2001. In other words you and everybody else in the world have been able to buy them every single day since then.
Like I said before you must be a V.I.P at the mint I just spent 10 minutes on hold trying to get the facts first hand before I responded. Straight from the mint>>>out of 19.5 million D-mint halfs minted only 12,334,000 were released into circulation. Of the 21.2 million P-mint Halfs none were released for sale to the public prior to April 12,2004 Now the kind lady did say you could get them in the uncirculated sets. But that the P mint halfs in rolls and bags went on sale to the public( with a slight chuckle when I said you mean us common folk):smile on April 12 2004 Now I will give you all the credit for being smarter than me on everything concerning coins. But don't talk down to me when I am getting my facts from the people who make the dang things.Call them and tell them they are wrong. Peace out good fellow. I have had enough of this already Cinman quote=GDJMSP;293996]Apparently I did not make myself clear. Not trying to talk down to you at all. But the information you are getting is wrong - period. I'll let it go at that.
Not saying I'm right or your wrong. But please call the mint and tell them they are wrong and inform them when they released the 01-p half. Because they seem to think they released them in 2004.... I would like to know how a newbie is going to learn anything if the institution that makes the coins can't seem to get their facts straight. Who would have the correct info if the Mint can't seem to get it right??????????????????????????????????????? Please help me out on this so I am more informed......:headbang::headbang::headbang: quote=GDJMSP;294276]Not trying to talk down to you at all. But the information you are getting is wrong - period. It's not at all unusual for the people you talk to on the phone when ya call the mint to not know what they are talking about. And to be quite honest there is no reason they should. In the first place, they are not at the mint nor are they mint employees. They work for an entirely different company that the mint hires to handle their telephone calls. You want good information, ask the folks here and you'll get it Just like you did from me - what I told you was accurate. Don't want to take my word for it ? You can always look it up if you like, and you can do that here as well. Look in the Numismatic Resources section under US Coins, Miscelaneous Links, Annual Reports of the US Mint. In those reports you will find records of the mint selling 2001 half dollars in 2001, '02, '03 and '04. You would also be able to find them for additional years but I haven't added them yet. You can however find those reports on the mint's web site if you wish to take it that far.
