Greetings---Does anyone know if this "coin" has any value? It is quite large and heavy (I included a dime in the photo to demonstrate scale), so should probably not even be called a "coin," but I'm not sure what else to call it. This was among a collection of other coins from a late relative, some of which have proved to be quite valuable, while others with little value. Any opinions on approximate worth appreciated. http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc281/getbizzyliving/IMG_1331.jpg http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc281/getbizzyliving/IMG_1332.jpg http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc281/getbizzyliving/IMG_1333.jpg
Thank you. So, when you say bullion value, does that mean I can multiply its weight times the going price of silver to get an approximate value? Is there some way to be reasonably sure it is actual silver (and its purity)?
I did a little searching. Looks like the silver content is about .999 fine. The $500 dollar coins apparently contain a whopping 55 troy ounces of silver, or about 60 ounces of silver in general. Multiply that by the spot price of silver right now, and I get a total of about $940. Not too shabby.
Thanks very much Jhonn, very helpful. Can you tell me where you found this info (the .999 fine and 55 troy ounces)?
If you don't really really really [did I mention really] need the cash for something important right now, you might want to hang onto this for a few years. You might be surprised and pleased. It's a nice investment in silver.
