This coin sat in @John Anthony for awhile & decided to give it a home since it got lower priced more my speed. Bela IV (1235 - 1270 A.D.) Hungary AR denar O: REX*-BELA+, king enthroned facing, holding scepter. R: MONETA REGISP HVNGARIA, pearled cross, four stars around. .64g 14mm Reference: Huszár 320; CNH 253. From the @Sallent Collection; From the Kenneth Miller Collection of Ake-Ptolemaïs and Related Biblical Coins
Nice coin @Mat I like the figure on the obverse. These Hungarian deniers are interesting coins. Nice purchase.
This may be Bela IV...or maybe III? Bela III - Bela IV of Hungary, 1172-1270 AD, AR Bracteate Head right, reverse incuse of obverse. Unger 122. 16 mm, 0.4 g
Very nice coin. The coins of BIII and BIV seem to arrive in rough condition. This is a very nice example.
Very nice! Another coin that I was tempted to buy . Decided that I had enough Hungarian denars in my collection. Hungary: Béla IV (1235-1270) Bracteate Denár (Huszár-200) Bracteate: Conjoined three-headed face; Legend around - BELA REX
Neat toning. I wouldn't have guessed it for an AR at first, had I not already known better. I like the cross and miniature crosses. Didn't I send you a Hungarian denar once? If memory serves, it was pre-1500, so undated. All of my attention on these has thus far been spent on the postmedieval dated coins from the 16th and 17th centuries.
@lordmarcovan Yup, is an overstrike and still have it, you even replied. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-109602
Well, hey, lookie there. Indeed I did reply ... three and a half years ago. You can see how crystal clear my powers of recollection are. Cool stuff. Hey, while I've got y'all on the topic of bracteates, does anybody know if the TPGs will grade them? I don't think so. I've seen some I really liked.
These are pretty cool. I have my collection of 1500-1676 denar that is pretty well fleshed out but that’s about it.
JA's photo of the coin is too dark. This picture shows the color best. I'm happy you are enjoying one of my former coins @Mat , especially so seeing how I am enjoying a few of your former coins too.
