can anyone please tell me about this "coin". I know that Wilson and Sumner were friends but nothing else to the connection.
Hard to see it but wondering if it is one of the First Spouse coins. They're available at the US Mint.
on the front is says born jan.6 1811 died mar 11 1874 around the head of Charles Sumner and under it is Cahs Sumner. On the back it says for vice president H Wilson 1872
That is an interesting coin,because H Wilson was Grant's choice as VP in the 1872 election and became VP in Mar of 1873. Because of the reverse with Chas Sumner info and death in in 1874 and no info on Wilson's death in Nov 1875, this may limit it's production as a rememberance to 1874-1875. Certainly deserves more research.
Not a coin, but it seems to be like a form of 'death medal' similar to those produced for British Monarchy in the centuries prior to the 20th century.
Let us know what you come up with... At the least it could be of interest to someone who collects Pres. U.S. Grant memorabilia, as it was his V.P. and it mentions Wilson for VP.
so far I have found two of these. Ones is $35 and one is $40. But i haven't found many to compare yet or other information on it except as you carpman98, it is a "death medal". I also have another "coin" actually a token. I have found it is a merchant token from the civil war era or earlier (1850's ). It was for the new american spa in richfield ny. It is listed as your photo as # 1222 as scarce in Benjamin Wright's book American Business Tokens ( 1972). No other info on it there. Welcome Jim.
