Ah yes I was wondering if maybe they used matte dies on some business strikes...that would also make sense but would benefit me personally much less...the dream has again evaporated (although I am definitely taking the loupe to those scratches tonight) Thanks guys!
What throws a lot of people are the high grade coins with the textured fields. The Lincoln cent was not designed to have flat smooth fields, they were supposed to have that textured effect. Same for the Buffalo nickels.
Just took a look through my loupe and the diagnostics aren't there I must have a third variety... I'm talking discovery coin Also checked out this nice VDB I have and it has proof-like rims...No matte'ing though. The thing is like the depth of two cents together almost. I think they were all over the place in 1909 Thanks again for the expertise guys.
I'll just stick this here...don't think it deserves its own thread: I was looking at PCGS price guide on iPhone app and was wondering two things: 1) Each "box" (which contains price for specific date, grade, and color) has two prices. Is this like a range? Lowest and highest price? Or bid/ask? Or something else? 2) I have only been on this guide a couple times so maybe this is a common occurrence but for the VDB in MS-63 they have a higher price listed for RB than RD. What gives? I know these things are just taking in data from some feed(s) but I can't understand how that could be the case. This guide has something to do with auction prices I believe, right? Maybe it's an anomoly? A couple people happened to pay more for RBs lately? Just struck me as weird...
This is from the iPhone CoinFacts app showing BN MS VDB. Format is a little different but the prices match.
CoinFacts puts them on separate pages unlike the price guide app. The price is the same for both in the CoinFacts app.
They probably haven't gotten around to updating both apps yet. I've seen this same RB priced higher than RD on another date a few weeks ago in the regular price guide. It has to be some sort of input error.........they do happen.
This was from early November. I took a screen shot of it then.......surprised I still had it. Instead of showing an RB priced higher than RD it shows a BN priced higher than an RB in MS66 grade.
Ah ok so this is just an error...I was thinking maybe it was valid and someone could justify with auction prices or somethjng like that...a little scary to have errors...I don't use this as gospel but I'll definitely take a peak if considering buying something out of my comfort zone. Actually I'm really glad that there's no justification other than error to justify RB being more valuable than RD lol... Thanks Robec!
It won't actually be in the price guide, but many times a BN may out price an RB or even a RD in a like grade. Grade is only one aspect of pricing. Eye appeal can add multiples of a price guide figure.
