#13 Your money or your life:

When Pompey the Great gave the Roman Senate the choice between paying his troops in Spain or having them return to Rome to exalt their Revenge upon the ungrateful Senate, the Senators quickly saw the wisdom of finding the silver to pay Pompey's men. Hence this coin was struck.

    lentulus_6.jpg
ROMAN REPUBLIC. Cn. Cornelius Lentulus Marcellinus.
    AR Denarius, 4.0g, 20mm, 6h; Spanish Mint, 74 BC.
Obv.: Diademed, draped and bearded bust of the Genius of the Roman People facing right, scepter over shoulder, "G P R" above.
Rev.: Globe between wreathed scepter and rudder, "EX - S C" in field, "CN LEN Q" below.
    Reference: Crawford 393/1a; Sydenham 752.

But Pompey's power would eventually grow dull when good old Caesar came forth, and a few battles later poor old Pompey got in over his head.

Nice historical tie-in for that coin. This Gaius Postumius denarius was issued in the same year, for the same reason:

#12: Operation Desert Storm...Ancient Rome style.

In 376 CE, Valens led the Roman army to Adrianople...

    The Barbarians laughed...

    asterix-and-obelix-laughing-at-romans.png

then the barbarians spanked the Romans so hard that it effectively marked the beginning of the end of the West...though the battle was ironically fought in the east.

    91-img-22.jpg

Valens died in the battlefield. His body was never recovered.

Rev.: VRBS ROMA; Roma seated left on cuirass, holding Victory set on globe in her right hand and spear in her left // TRPS•
Reference: RIC IX 27b and 45a.

Run away! The barbarians are bringing their terror tour to all corners of the empire and can't be stopped.

I'm normally not drawn to modern coins, but that 10 Euro coin is special. I'd definitely love to add one to my collection some day. I am a huge fan of Asterix and Obelix. I started following the comics since I was a child in Cuba...believe it or not it was actually popular there.

Awesome, I've been a big fan since I was a child too! The 10 euro coin isn't mine, but I want one. They made quite a variety.

Still, I like our Valens siliquae better. :)

A coin of Valens' always starts a historical 'what if' concerning his battle strategy at Andrianople.....

I'll pile on with one of mine:

I do not have a lot on the Valens front... but your Siliqua, @Sallent is a beautiful coin! I have considered collecting Siliquae, but, nope... I'll stay in the Republic Period with my coins.

    Here are my basic Valens:

    # 11. Et tu a backstabber? A Roman knife party!

There is probably no greater Roman general than Julius Caesar.

    7kEODq4.jpg

He conquered Gaul and defeated Pompey the Great, but his talents as a soldier did not translate well to the political arena, and 27 knife wounds later, Caesar left this world.

    IXh6ny.gif

So when I had the chance to buy one of his coins, I reached deep into my wallet and jumped at the opportunity.
