I'm in my third year of searching halves and I can say with certainty that my silver finds have dropped each year. This year has been terrible compared to my first year. My luck lately has been so poor that I didn't even bother with it this week. I might just sit things out for a couple of more weeks before starting up again. I did the same thing last year and it made a difference for a while.
I pick up Half Dollars whenever my credit union has any. No luck such as posted by others, but occasionally I find a partial silver. I have yet to find a proof of any denomination.
silver Went to the bank I normally get my boxes of pennies from. Searched boxes of halves before. Normally when I ask my "favorite "teller for rolled halves she doesn't have any rolls just a dollar or two loose and I have always delined. Yesterday I asked if she had any rolled halves she said no but asked the teller next to her if she had any. She only had $2.00 loose I said I would take them. Surprise 2 1936 AU Walkers.
just got done with my box of 1000 halves only 2 1964 90% but found a 1998-S clad proof a beauty thats the year of the matte proof. My big finds were I found a 1998-S clad proof unreal had some marks but not bad. I have also found 4 rolls ofMS-65 toMS-67 GEM UNC they are real beuties. I'm keeping about 6 rolls of low mintages from 1980's and 1990's:thumb: and a few 2001's and 2004's just kind of strange all the 1998's in that grade in there
Went ot a town outside of Pittsburgh this weekend. We stopped at a bank to use the ATM and I ran in and asked for 1/2 dollars. I got 5 rolls, and got one 40% silver, a 1971 S proof, nice condition. and some uncs.
Just picked up my box today! Went through two rolls at lunchtime. The rest will have to wait for later. 1 40% silver - 1967 3 nice uncircs including a 2006-d, and a couple from the 90's (I thinK) 4 Keepers from 2 rolls is pretty good I think. With silver at $15.60+ I hope i can mine some more silver from the box. :high5:
Well, I have gone through 1/2 the box now (25 rolls) and I have 5 - 40% silvers, and a whole roll of BU's ranging in dates from 1996-2006. No proofs. I have saved several BU 2002-D's from this box. Seems strange for this part of the country - low mintage that year too - 2 - 2 1/2 million. I'll post the rest of my results when I finish. This is fun - I think I will get another box soon.
2002 has a low mintage 'cause 2002+ have been years that the Kennedy wasn't minted for circulation, only for collectors through rolls/bags purchased from the mint, and proof sets.
Save all the 1987 and 2002+ halves regardless of condition. You never know, but years down the road, you might make some YN's day by giving him a couple circulated halves to fill some empty spots in his coin book and inspire him to keep searching until he finds them in BU condition.
While mine are usually BU, I've gotten quite a few that are pretty beat up. I save them for the sole purpose that hopefully one day, I'll get the chance to give them to a kid that needs to fill a blank in their book and they just haven't been able to find them in circulation.
Ok here is the final count - 10 -40% silvers 30 BU's including a 2006-d 1 2004-P VF I kept upon the advice of gatzdon. From what people have been saying here - thats an above average box. I think I will get another - I want to find some 90% silvers!:thumb:
I found a couple of 1964's in my box I got last week but the big thrill was finding a 1998-S clad proof and at 5 rolls of gem unc 1998-P all the gems were 1998 kind of strange I'm going to keep all the 1998's low mintage. I also found somepretty nice other dates from the 70's 80's 90's and a few from 2000's just a pain unloading what I do not want I always pick a bank branch not near me:smile Here is pic of proof 1998-S I found and nice 1998-P pics are bad web cam not good for pics
Here are my finds in 150.00 of halfs, 10 of the 40% and one 1972-s proof. Cant see how a proof coin can get into change.
