Not only is it not copper, silver, or gold...it's not even metal! Some possibly escaped into circulation local to where produced, but they were not ever officially released prior to the end of the war.

Here are some assorted Depression-era sales tax tokens from US states, in just about any material but copper, silver or gold. There's aluminum, plastic, fiber (cardboard), zinc, and brass here. Times were tough, and most of these were worth only a fraction of a cent (denominations in "mills"), so they used whatever materials were cost-effective.

Also in the same big exonumia bulk bag, I found these aluminum Mardi Gras doubloons and wooden nickels.

@LaCointessa- check 'em out. Did you ever get any more stuff like this? I know you liked the 2017 MGD I sent you.

I used to have my own custom wooden nickels and wooden dollars, once upon a time, when I was running a little shoestring coin business in an antique mall.

Oh, and these (same big exonumia bag again) were iron. The Germans did a lot with iron in WW1.

Here's a pretty decent pair of German iron kriegsgeld 10-pfennig tokens.

I had one of those "Vaterland" ones before, with the muscular munitions lady slinging around huge artillery shells. Cool stuff.
