Even today the Austrian Mint emphasizes that its history goes back to 1194. Duke Leopold wanted - and got - 12 tons of silver for Richard, and then decided to make coins from that treasure. There are some "is said to" elements in that story, but probably some truth too ... Christian
What I find remarkable is that so much of it came in coin to have an effect, rather than just straight bullion...
The rare Richard I of Cyprus, does indeed, look like any other Byzantine coin and its costs a pretty penny. This is not mine, unfortunately...

A tetarteron of Richard I minted in Cyprus I is up for auction in the latest CNG eAuction, under the World section and has any estimate of $500. Hopefully one of you will be posting it in February.
