Hi All, Just curious about this cent. It caught my eye with the toning on it, it was in my pocket change. Looks like a doubled die reverse to me. The columns on the left look odd. What you think? Deteriorated die, Machine doubling? lincoln 1rev.jpg toned cent 005.JPG toned cent 007.JPG toned cent2.jpg

Does Lincoln inside the Memorial have his legs crossed?

If I'm seeing what you are on the left side columns, this is part of the design. Depending upon the stage in the life of a die, the columns are more pronounced. As the die wears these columns lose some of their sharpness. You will also see this in the inside column roof supports. They may start off sharp and distinct but eventually may start to disappear as the die wears. The 2001 does have doubled die features. Many are very minor and appear on the left or right of the statue on the inside of the columns.

I'll have to keep that in mind next time I'm standing there, and keep ready to dash to a side.
