1862 Belgian 5 centimes with a large cud

    That smearing occurs naturally, as the metal flows unconfined toward the rim, dipping into and out of recesses in the die along the way. You wouldn't see crisp edges in the lettering in this area for the same reason that water does not hug the edges of rocks as it spills over a waterfall . . .
