352sdeer Collecting Lincoln cents for 50 years!

This is one of the Huge problems I see for collectors of silver coins. Silver coins are prone to having been repeatedly chemically inhanced. ( my terminology) Thus it would seem that when these coins are sent in the “Jig is up” and they get Details slabbed. What ever the reason they were cleaned doesn’t matter. Like I do with Lincoln Cents (it’s all I collect) if I see ANY problem I stay away. Lots of good coins to be found why mess with problem coins

With all due respect, sir; I would suggest you hold off further bidding/buying until you've had the time to acquire the knowledge necessary to do so wisely. One of the most unfortunate aspects of this hobby is the fact that it's very, very easy to forever bury oneself in coins bought believing them to be something they're not. If you do insist on buying now, please consider locating a genuinely knowledgeable and reliable dealer willing to work with you. Yes, this may cost more compared to average completed eBay listings, but in the long run, especially if you find the "right" dealer, it will be money well spent and you're much more likely to end up ahead for your efforts.

Hey these are the heavy hitters in the hobby. Although some of these Hitters are a bit rough around the edges and lack sometimes in tact their information is usually spot on. Please don’t be disillusioned this is a VERY helpful bunch of coin nuts.

Thanks for saving me the time to type the same sentiments. It seems he missed the 'With all due respect' portion. Unfortunately, as is often the case with unsolicited advice, it will go unheeded.

To the OP, the best piece of collecting advice I received when I was starting out was to periodically sell some of the coins I bought. You never really learn how good of a deal it was until you actually sell it. And post up that Vespasian Aureus, I would love to see it!!!!

Ya know, the only thing he was trying to do was to help you. To actually give you good advice. And that's exactly what he did.

The mere fact that not only do you not recognize it as such, but yet you take it as being offensive - well that tells me that you have got a whole lot to learn ! Not only about coins, but about people as well.

Now if wanna leave the attitude at the door, then you will most definitely get the help you seek here. But if ya don't, well, then you probably won't. Especially not from me, and I've made it a point to be helping people for most of my life.

you very right i took that offensivly like i should not be buying coins if i dont know what to buy or how to find the true value all i asked is are a cleaning coin valuless simple question did i get a answer no i get go find someone to help you it may cost money but so on so forth. i bought a drapped bust penny with a counter mark EF i came on here and asked did i get a good buy or do counter marks hurt the coin im not that far in numismatic class i figure it would be more pricy because store owners use to stamp their coins to get customers to come in. i paid fifty dollars for it and 2 guys ask to see a photo of it and i posted it its on my page and they said i got a great deal. if you dont want to answer a question dont but dont make me feel im stupid on coins im not i dont need to hire no one to help me i thought this was a site to ask a question on a coin if you dont know something and you guys give a bit of your knowlege and say no its ruined or its worth 30 but i get told to pay some to help me how am i suppose to feel elated because i could not get a answer to one simple question. and a guy under his statement msde a crack remark too that set me off ptsd gets me everytime i feel someone is being sarcastic to me. but peace like i said the first time i wont bother this site no more.

He was spinning and bouncing up and down like a jumping jack!!!

@BooksB4Coins gave some of the best advice I’ve seen on the site so far and I feel plenty of tact was also used in trying to educate an admittedly new numismatist. To bad for @Larry R Bon he’s going to miss a hell of a ride here on the site!! Oh yea thank you Books.

Your own words, in questioning if cleaning impacts value, made it clear that you're newer to this field. There's absolutely nothing wrong with being new and/or unfamiliar with certain aspects of this hobby, but there sure as hell is something disturbingly wrong with your reaction to a perfectly respectful and completely innocuous post making very simple and neutral suggestions. NOTHING I said was in any way an attack upon you or even remotely insulting, sir. If the post was of no help, fine; simply move along allowing anyone else who may read it to take from it what they can and/or if they so choose.

Surely someone of your age and experience understands that each and every one of us can learn something from the next guy, be it the 103 year old lady down the street, or the four year old kid next door, but we'll never know what we could've learned until we listen, giving due consideration to what was said. In no way did I even remotely suggest I am what you ridiculously painted me as, but this is an area I happen to know a little something about after a few decades involved in this hobby as a non-collector. I've personally witnessed the mistakes made by people in similar situations to you, and had simply hoped that said experience could possibly help you to avoid the same pitfalls; this was my mistake. I wish you the best in your collecting endeavors, sir, but will not again waste my time on you.

That said, I offer my sincere appreciation to Doug, Beef, and Deer for seeing my earlier post as intended. Thank you, gentlemen.

Not for $320. It would be worth $100 or a bit less. It looks nice.

Why do people wash cars? Because they get dirty. Most coins are made of metals that oxidize (tarnish), so they think you need to use chemicals to get it off to make it look new again. But the original patina is where the value lies, like in a Tiffany lamp. Would you use sand paper to clean your car when it got dirty? No, but unfortunately that is what people that don't know any better do.
