Hi everybody, I am still trying to get this whole double die thing correct. I watched a bunch of youtube videos, studied images, read articles and just when I think I got it, the coins turn out to be something else. I am posting a few pictures, could you guys be kind enough to reply back and say yes or no for each photo. Don't worry there won't be too many.
I suggest buying a copy of the Cherry Pickers Guide to Die Varieties. In addition to showing hundreds of photos of doubled dies, there is also an excellent Appendix that shows the different types of doubled dies, and what ejection/mechanical/shelf/strike doubling looks like, and how to determine what type of doubling is on the coins you find.
I definitely will take your advice, it lead me here and I love this website. I recognize the name, I had emailed you some photos of various coins just yesterday and you suggested I join here. Thanks for the good advice.
Yes, if you (or anyone else) wants to collect modern US error coins, arm yourself with the most recent Cherrypickers Guides. You don't have to buy updated versions each time one comes out, because with CT and some excellent websites around, you can get the info you need.
Photos are not crisp. I do see doubling on the 83-D, but before something is a true doubled die, usually it is either MD (mechanical doubling, machine doubling, ejection doubling) or die deterioration doubling. There are some good illustrations here which show the differences between MD and doubled dies.
The pics are quite blurry, so that can distort, but I would say not... Although I can see doubling effect, I think it more likely, if anything, to be mmd or machine doubling which is not a doubled die problem. Another good idea is to practice taking pics of coins. Head on from above is always the best, and read up on lighting, there are some good threads here on CT.
I did check it out and you are my new hero!!! I love it, great resource and info .On my way to becoming an expert thanks to you!!
By the way... The correct terminology is Doubled Die.. not double die. Big Difference! Forget the YouTube videos. They know nothing!
