I have to admit, a coin countdown is a great and novel idea! You are off to a nice start with your beautifull Julia Domna example:happy:

Wang Mang, the Emperor of a thousand coin reforms...and none worked. So hated were these coins that the Chinese economy ground to a halt and people cried for want of good money.:drowning: not even the threat of execution could get his people to embrace all his crazy coin ideas, but their frustration is my # 19, and unlike the ancient Chinese I definitely think there's nothing to cry about at the privilege of having this beautiful coin in my collection.

Who doesn't love a good sample of Chinese Spade money with beautiful green patina?

Stay tuned tomorrow for #18. Will it be Greek? Will it be Roman? One thing is certain, it will be ancient and cool!

Poor Wang Mang. At least he is getting some posthumous appreciation here. Nice spade!

Cool! I've had many a Wang Mang (dang, that sounds SO wrong, doesn't it? LOL), but just round cash coins- never any spades or suchlike.

I'd love to see it. How exquisite? All Domna tets are exquisite in my book.

This was my first Chinese coin in 1990. I knew nothing about them then and not more now.

Unfortunately that was before I was taking pics of coins and back in the latter 1980's when I was headed off to college. But I have a mental pic of the coin seared into my memory.

Rather than crowd this Top 20 with Gordies, shutting out some well deserving coins, I'll just dump my top favorite Gordian III purchases of 2017 here under #18.

I couldn't believe it either until I decided to put all my purchases of 2017 together on a table and sort them out for this thread. I had a feeling the total was around 60 coins...until I counted them all.

Next year will definitely be a much slower year for me as I want to pick up a few vintage pieces to decorate my house, such as a vintage Coca Cola vending machine, a vintage 1930s or 1940s radio, and perhaps some vintage inkwells and fountain pen sets for my home and work offices. All of that costs a lot of money, so I doubt I'll exceed 20 coins. But hey, even 20 coins is a respectable haul, right? And its not like I dont already have 150+ ancients to play with.

Ah, now that’s what I’m here for. I knew you wouldn’t let the Gordie fans down. I’ll have a couple of mine answer your roach party call...

What are the origins of this "roach" business? Does it just apply to Gordies? Only silver ants? (Oh, hey, that's an insecty-sounding abbreviation, too, isn't it?)

What about Severus Alexander? And later bronzes? Those seem pretty ubiquitous, too...

I'd show you some of MY roaches, but I'm afraid that in MY household, that would be rather literal. We're in an ever-losing battle with 'em. But our cats do their part. They like to "play with 'em until they break".
