Yeah, there were definitely a lot of "tire kickers" around the show. I would have a coin that they were looking for, seemingly at the right grade and price, but they would often find some excuse not to buy it.

We will be set up at Baltimore next week for basically the entire week, then for the public over the weekend. We hope to have a great show. The metals market will hopefully generate some hobby interest as well.

What your missing is that many, many go to a coin show for the first time and just want to look, learn, search for the best deals. These are the future coin purchasers and dealers with poor attitudes towards them loose in the long run. I go to at least 3 shows a month all year long and see this all the time with some dealers that think every person should buy from them. If not then get away from my table. You want to learn? Then go buy a book and get away from my table. Your a kid so get away from my table. All such attitudes loose in the long run. I've been going to coin shows for many, many, many years and when I see attiduds like that, I register that dealer as someone never to buy anything from even it he is the only dealer there.
Sorry for the above but way to many things like that at coin shows.

Its interesting to read the views of dealers here who have posted in this thread. During the summer months I generally ride my Harley to shows so when I go in I have my leather on. The dealers who dont know me dont really want to give me the time of day. Most of the shows here are smaller shows < 30 dealers.

I do alot of tire kicking at shows with dealers I don't know, most of whom wont give me the time of day. Careful how you treat those people standing on the other side of the counter gentleman (customers). I can tell you first hand there are plenty of people here in cointalk that do in fact have more coins in their collections than 90% of the dealers at these shows and more than just a few here in cointalk that can write some some hefty checks for the right coins. Don't ever underestimate a customer with the way they dress or present themselves.

    Just my thoughts.

not missing that at all. i enjoy the shows for exactly those type of people. i dislike the people who are typically condescending know it all jerks who lust after coins but usually can't afford them so they debase the dealer.

"that's a nice coin, but what is PCGS thinking, MS65? that must be a misprint, that's an AU at most. i'll pay you (the AU price) for it, no way its worth (the asking price). anyone who pays that much is a fool." and then they stare at the coin in the case from a distance.

those are droolers and they need to go away. i have no problem showing a coin to anyone who asks, i simply ask that if you dislike the price and we can't agree on a price than accept that. i am not a salesman, i have coins for sale and will gladly let you decide if you want to buy it - at no point will i ever try to sell you on a coin. if you are simply looking to learn about coins, you are more than welcome to sit down and talk if it is slow. i have learned a ton from people that way and it's part of the shows i enjoy. getting to know the collectors is smart business and knowing what collectors are looking for means more repeats sales.

i'm not making my living working tables, i work the shows for fun, and it can be very entertaining. if you are going to be at the Baltimore show stop by and say hello.

so true, but there is a difference between the people looking and passing on coins and those who are know it all jerks. i've sold some very nice coins to guys who looked as through they slept at the bus station the night before. i have been dismissed on numerous occasions by dealers because i don't look "money" enough for them. of course when they discover who i'm at the show with they change their tune.

i watched that show for 20 minutes one night and about laughed myself to death. they were selling a rare set, how rare could they be if they had 5000 of them? it's another group with a seemingly unfortunate name, i hope.
