I have had the Trajan Decius hole filled for some time but have wanted a better portrait for my 3rd century set. Here is the original and upgrade. This typical Decius has a common portrait with a strong obverse legend, but time has left some pitting that has had me searching for an improvement. Trajan Decius AR Antoninianus. IMP C M Q TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG, radiate, draped & cuirassed bust right / PANNONIAE, two Pannoniae facing each other, shaking hands in front of standard in the center. The upgrade below has an atypical portrait than is usually seen. The portrait, surfaces and toning drew me to this coin. Trajan Decius, 249 - 251 AD Silver Antoninianus, Rome Mint, 22mm, 3.26 grams O: IMP C M Q TRAIANVS DEVIVS AVG, Radiate, draped & cuirassed bust right. Reverse: VICTORIA AVG, Victory advancing left holding wreath and palm. RIC29c Share your Trajan Decius coins!!
I like the scarcer Pannoniae variety of your first one, but also the less generic portrait of the new one. I'd keep both for sure, especially as the reverse type of the first is classic Decius. Here's a portrait from an early issue. And another less typical one.
Wow!! the up-grade has such a fantastic portrait!!! But i love the reverse of your 'older' coin...so I'd definitely keep both Here's one example I have a photo of...I think I liked the wide flan of this Ant and the horse 'Z' just posted two terrific examples
Agreed with Zum and Mikey: Reverse of your first and portrait of your new one are really great @TJC ! I only have one from this guy: RI Trajan Decius 249-251 CE AR Ant Dacia draco standard
That is an outstanding, sensitive portrait and wonderful toning on the second OP coin! Here is my Decius Sestertius (nobody likes it, but I do):
A big upgrade for sure, well done ! Trajan Decius, Antoninianus Rome mint, AD 250-251 IMP C M Q TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind DACIA, Dacia standing left holding a standard surmounted by an ass's head 3.52 gr - 20/23 mm Ref : RCV # 9368, RSC # 16, RIC IV-3 # 12b Ex Auctiones.ch Q
Really great Decius coins everyone! I plan to keep both. I do like the reverse of the original. @ Q: Great donkey head staff Rx!
Nice Trajan Deciuses everyone (Decii?). I just have a few. This one with a Victory reverse weighs a whopping 5.39 grams and appears to be in better silver than the others in my collection.
After seeing all of your Deciuseses (Spelling?...got me) I now think want one of all of each type! Dacia w/ Donkey Head, Emperor on Horse, Abundencia, Trajan Sestertius, ... lots of cool stuff!
That got me thinking - I do have a Trajan Decius Dacia issue, but without the ass's (dragon's?) head - this is a sestertius with Dacia holding a legionary standard, which makes no sense to me, since I thought Dacia was an enemy of Rome. This has the thick, square flan of that era, with a reverse legend that is almost vertical and very close to the central image - as if the celators knew they had to accommodate a crowded planchet:
