I've seen several MA XXI for sale and am watching two as I type this message. The only reason I haven't purchased one is that two of the coins above came up for sale. Neither were cheap, so now I have to take time to lick my wounds before I spend more.
LEG IV and VIIII are gorgeous ! You asked Mark Antony, Denarius struck at a travelling mint, c.32-31 BC ANT AVG III VIR RPC, Galley right LEG IV, Legionary eagle between two standards 3.67 gr Ref : HCRI #352, Cohen #30 Q
Huge congrats on getting closer to your goal---they are terrific examples!!! I remember starting off (late 1980's) with the goal of collecting all Legio examples....and had about 12 of the more 'common' types....and I began to get a bit obsessive about getting the others, especially when they went beyond my budget but i sold them all and now have just one as an example of the type I'll keep an eye out for you in case I stumble upon any that you still lack
Congrats, Bing. That is a fine Marc Antony "fleet" you have accumulated. Octavian is quaking in his boots...er caligae. * https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caligae
I have only one Marc Antony...its a little rough:/ But here it is. At least the legion # is intact. Just got these pics tonight. It has been bugger to photograph.
Yes it is, but sadly, many of this series are in rough condition. Like you say, however, at least the legion number is plainly visible.
Great coins, here are mine, the XXII Leg RCV 1479/82 is in far better shape than the III Leg RCV 1483.
Nice collection Bing. I have two modest silver MA Leg coins. The one not shown in this thread is a bit earlier. Legionary eagle with wreath series, Cr 141/2a (similar to RBW 624), 189 - 180 BC. The wreath to the right of the standard is obscured by the punched mark. I have been trying to decide if this is a counter stamp, or just a crater.
Don't ye ever get tired??? https://www.academia.edu/35318872/_...XXIII_Revista_Numismática_Hécate_4_2017_60-75 ..."rara avis"...
Nice coins, Bing. That's the beauty of collecting, isn't it. The next one is just around the corner. Good luck with your 'missing' ones. I have been keeping an eye out for you. Mine is in the condition of a lot of them. I bought it as an RRC 1220 (but I cannot confirm that it is - maybe someone else will).
Thanks. The more eyes on topic the better chance I might find what I'm looking for my collection. I was an unsuccessful bidder this past weekend on two of the coins I still need. But the hunt goes on.
I had doubles of LEG IIII but I sold one of them a few years ago. Here's the one I kept: I'm a big fan of Antony's and was trying to get all of the Legion numbers like you but I wasn't focusing on quality. In the last year or so I sold many lower grade legionary's but kept the rare ones!
That's a nice Legio IIII. I need to find one sooner or later. Most of my MA Legionary coins are in decent condition, but there are a few I will need to upgrade if ever I complete my set. For now, my only requirement is that the legion number be legible.
