Hi all, I'm waiting on this one to arrive. It's a 1577 City of Riga,Latvia. Silver 1 Schilling . Clipped Planchet. Not really rare or expensive, but interesting. They used a machine to make these coins called a Walzwerk. Actually there are more error coins of this type, during this time period than fully struck examples!
What's your oldest Error Coin? That question could be answered 2 ways.. Oldest by date or oldest by how long ago you found one. This is my oldest Error Coin I have as in the first ever Mint Error I ever found that got me started in the hobby 31 years ago! I sent it to NGC a few years ago to have it attributed. The Details Grade is due to my ignorance when I attempted to make it look nicer when I cleaned it with Ajax when I was 16 years old! It is a Lamination Error -
The oldest I believe I have is this Canadian Large Cent with doubling at the date. Or re-punched date. Never was quite sure.
Not really an error collector, but I do have this double-struck Parthian drachm of Orodes II (57-38 BC). The first strike was badly off-center towards the bottom of the flan; the second strike was well-centered and partially obliterated the first image, but you can still see the king's second face down on his neck/torso area. (The doubling is also visible on the reverse, but it's less obvious unless you're very familiar with Parthian coins.)
Well ya learn something new everyday! As for oldest error coin? While the coin below is not the oldest, it IS the one I'm most proud of since it was not advertised as a Type 2 when it sold on eBay.
Picked this one up recently. The sellers photos did not show the die clash. I was really surprised to see a clashed die on an ancient coin! You can see the outline of the bust struck into the reverse. Jovian AE3 "Vows in wreath" SCARCE Jovian AD 363-364 AE3 Obv: D N IOVIA-NVS P F AVG - Rosette Diademed bust right, draped and cuirassed.
