I'd sworn off denarii for a while, but this is another bargain that came in over the weekend. I took a gamble on a poor quality photo on this one, and I think it paid off. Interestingly, Pegasus almost looks like he has a horn here. Domitian as Caesar, denarius Obv: CAESAR AVG DOMITIANVS, laureate bust right Rev: COS IIII, Pegasus stepping right 18mm, minted at Rome in 76 AD, RIC 238 EDIT: I forgot to include this. Here's a shot of the flip it came in; can anyone decipher the writing on the bottom right, and what it might mean?
Cool Pegasus! I think the word is "Bourgogne". A collector's name, perhaps? Provenance? Here's one I bought because of the Pegasus: Caligula, AD 37-41 Roman provincial Æ 20 mm, 6.74 g Peloponnese, Corinthia, Corinth, Ae. P. Vipsanius Agrippa and M. Bellius Proculus, duoviri, AD 37-38 Obv: C CAESAR AVGVSTV, bare head right Rev: M BELLIO PROCVLO IIVIR / COR, Pegasus flying right. Refs: RPC I 1173; Amandry (1988) XVII; BCD Corinth 405-6.
The Unicorn-Pegasus is a rare variety, but not unknown... On a serious note, nice coin! I've always liked this type, which revives one used by one of Augustus's moneyers.
I have a few Pegasus that I can toss in: ROMAN REPUBLIC: RR AE Double Litra 235 BCE 19.5mm 6.54g Rome mint Hercules r club - Pegasus r club ROMA Cr 27-3 HN Italy 316 S 591 CARTHAGE: Carthage Siculo AE 15 Palm Tree Pegasus BRUTTIUM: Bruttium Lokroi Eizephyrioi 300-268 BC AE 23 Athena Pegasus
The OP coin has a really nice portrait in good 'Rome' style. Here's one from the provincial 'o' mint. Domitian Caesar AR Denarius, 2.81g Ephesus (?) mint, 76 AD RIC V1494 (R2). BMC V488 bis. RSC 47 var. RPC 1465 (1 spec.). Obv: CAESAR AVG F DOMITIANVS; Head of Domitian, laureate, bearded, r. 'o' mint mark below neck Rev: COS IIII above; Pegasus r. Ex G&N, eBay, 27 August 2015.
