I received this coin as gift a few years ago from a friend. It is rarer variety of coin that was a challenge to attribute, but thats where the fun is right I have photographed and re-photographed it multiple times without a result I was happy with. The scumbly surfaces have played havoc in my attempt to produce a reasonable representation of this hearty 32mm provincial. Finally I have couple of pics that I like! I have two sets of pics below because I cannot decide which I like better. IMO, the first, lighter shots, show the detail of the coin better. The second, darker shots, show a rich and truer color of the surfaces. Which do you like better? Feel free to share the coin that is/was your photographic challenge. First Set: Second Set: Philip II, AE32 of Samosata, Commagene. O: AYTOK K M IOYΛI ΦIΛIΠΠOC CEB, Radiate cuirassed bust left Rx: ΦΛ CAMOCATEΩN MHTΡOΠ KOM, Tyche seated left on rock, holding ears of corn in right hand and eagle on right arm, Pegasos running left below SNG Copenhagen 27. Very rare. https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/pr...247249_ad_ae_33_very_rare/803337/Default.aspx
Really nice, TJC! I like the dynamic range on them, and the true black background. I also prefer the second. Also nice coin.
Great Coin. 2nd is sharper. The first set seems as the white balance is a bit high. Do you shoot coins with a camera or a smartphone? I have the Galaxy Note 8 . The duel Camera’s make for a great camera but I still have issues shooting coins. Any tips would be welcome with open ears. Or eyes in this case. Great job.
They are both good images but I prefer the second set. Nice work, getting good pictures of darker coins is a challenge.
Without the digital camera, it would have been totally impossible for me or anybody else IMHO to determine that the 2 following coins represent an As of Emperor Hadrian, along with a plowing scene heading left under Emperor Caracalla. As for your 2 examples of photos, I think I can read the legend much better on the first example. Here are my 2 humble coins.
I shoot with a canon t2i and a single bulb, reveal 40w. White balance is set. Lighting distance and angle were charged to to get the 2 different sets of photos. I did adjust it slightly in photoshop elements (which I could learn a ton more about). I have shot my iPhone but it does not compete with my camera. I have heard Galaxy photo cameras are better than I phones.
Here's another coin of Philip II, shot by the same digital camera. Denomination is 8 Assaria. BTW.. There seems to be no match for a plowing scene heading left under Emperor Caracalla, in any reference whatsoever. It's a challenge indeed.
It's really hard to get a good photo of a glossy black patina. This took a lot of photo-processing to make it legible.
Both of those pics looks good to me @TJC ! I have a similar coin from Philip I, it was so tough to photograph that I just have up and edited the sellers pics a bit. Mine is similar in color and condition as well. This is as good as I could edit it., but it's pretty close.
