This morning I was perusing the mint's Web site and decided to look at the 2006 $50 Buffalo proof. I saw here where the mint listed total sales of the 2006 Buffalo at 322,000 for the year 2006: http://usmint.gov/mint_programs/buffalo24k/index.cfm?year=2006#tblTable Does anyone know if the number 322,000 refers to all $50 Buffalos sold, including proofs, or is it only refering to bullion sales? I know the mint placed a limit of 300,000 proofs to be struck. Does anyone know if they did in fact mint 300,000? Were all of them sold? If not, is the $800 price tag why their site lists them as no longer available? Thanks for any info!
they did not selll all 300,000 proofs. i do not know the exact number sold, but i know it was not full mintage. as for them listed as no longer available, its because they are dated 2006. the 2007's are for sale now.
that sounds about right Bigswick. I knew the proofs were abotu that but couldnt remember the exact number, and i dont think i ever knew the unc mintage.
I guess I'm still wondering if 300,000 proofs were actually minted with only 252,000 sold? If so, what was done with the other 48,000? Or, was it actually 252,000 minted and sold, the mint having tied actual production efforts to public demand? Hmmm....
Usually with the collector type coins they will mint a certain stockpile before they go on sale, ad then from that point on strike to order plus a small umber of extras to use to handle replacements for lost or returned coins. For sales of 252,000 they probably actually struck around 260,000
