Grandfather passed away back in 2001 left me some old U.S. coins and this Roman coin. Looks to be brass and has some weight to it. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Fake?
I'm very new at this but nothing seems fake to me, style seems, right patina is ok, but may we see a picture of the edge of the coin to check for a casting seam? Thanks, Jacob
Everything checks out to me but don't take my word for it I am VERY new at ancients so I'll wait for others to answer before I confirm. Thanks, Jacob
I am pretty sure it is a reproduction of this Hadrian As: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1168742 It says "REP - REO" on the reverse. :-( John
Also look at: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=3434015 There is no "REP - REO" legend on either issue. Jacob is correct that the style and fabric of the coin look genuine, but unfortunately, I am pretty sure it is not. John
That would be a reference to Neptune, the guy with the trident on the reverse? I did not see a published example with that legend, but I did not look that hard. I would be happy for it to be a genuine coin.
OK, here is one: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1525607 Things are looking better for this being an authentic Roman coin of Hadrian. What is the weight in grams? John
I certainly cannot say with any certainty, but I believe it is NOT genuine. Something is off compared to the coins referenced above.
