Just got this one recently. All I need now is 1794,1795 and 1804 for a complete set 1794-date. Opinions? I paid VG $$$ for it...$122 shipped, perhaps I was less patient than I should have been.

It looks to me (totally uneducated for large cents) like it would make VG when I compare it to Heritage coins. However, that green stuff could be a problem. Is it PVC? Can it be removed?

I would call it... VF-20 Details, corroded, damaged net VG-8 ...so, yeah, the price you paid sounds fair! Nice Coin!!

I want to say VF20 details, net F12. The only thing I don't like is the green spot. Other than that I think you did okay. I can't figure out the variety.

The green is verdigris, I will not attempt to remove it. I have learned not to by practicing on common wheats, you'll only make it worse.

    Same here.
It will end up being a HUGE gaping hole.

While the coin does have some porosity issues (like most of the early dates), that's not a bad example for $122. Congrats!

Good luck on completing your set!

Do you have any pics of your entire large cent collection? I'd love to take a look at it...Mike

p.s. we both are trying to complete date sets -- you are about 20 dates ahead of me.

I have other large cents here, but the collection is being used as collaterol right now, it is not in my hands. Also, I forgot , there are a few Indians I need also, sorry.

Too bad - I wanted to see the 1799.

The 1799 is in poor to ag, not very nice but a hole filler, the 1798 is the nicest I have of the bust series.

There is no such thing as a bad 1799 - it might grade poor to ag, but that is not a bad thing. I want that date and the 1804(which I know I can get), I just have not seen the right ones yet. Or at least I do not know what the right ones are. Sigh - one of these days.

The 1799 was my 1st large cent. When I was a kid, I collected wheaties, and my Uncle Skip gave it to me for a birthday present, I wanted something OLD, LOL.

Turns out, he still collects, and just loaned me enough for a pair of Whites MXT metal detectors, has my large cent collection as collaterol, I just did.

To me, the large cents are just plain history. My set is not that great, but in my head, I would rather have the thought"I wonder who had this in their pocket"

when I read Pennywhimsy, about George Washington turning in pots and pans, the patriots stripping boats, etc, I was hooked for life.

How did I get italics all the sudded?

"How did I get italics all the sudded?"

I have no idea, but I think it may be contagious.

Seriously, thanks for sharing your coins. As new additions to my collection are all to few and far between, I enjoy living vicariously through the NEWPs of others. Take care...Mike
