Don't know if this is common or not but I found 4 different 1998P Kennedy's in 4 different rolls that have the exact same die crack in them. It starts on the rim between the 1 and the 9 and extends up tracing the base of the neck. Is it rare to find this on different coins or did they just happen to come from the same batch?
All came from the same die. When a die gets old it starts to crack. If the mint doesn't catch it in time it breaks off and that is when a coin can be found with a Cud. Die cracks as GDJMSP said, aren't uncommon....but then I don't find them in change every day either. I have kept a few coins with Die Cracks...one a friend of mine owns is a St.G. $20 gold piece...it has a die crack running about half way around the rim. Speedy
Dave, If you were to get a few BU rolls of Kennedy's from the same Striking (Minting) run, then you could possibly get an entire series of Kennedy Halfs showing the progression of a Die Crack from it's beginning to the point of Die failure. Frank
I bagged 'em, I'd rather reinvest them towards more rolls of Kennedy's in hopes of finding some silver or possible some Franklins. I actually did find a Walking Liberty one time. Thank god people just cash in their jars full of coins for some extra cash!
Very familiar location for a crack. I have seen this in various different years in the 1990s. 94, 95, 96 etc. saved them for a couple of months but then; I just cashed them in at face value. Never heard any talk about it and did not hear if there was a premium or not. I assume not.
