Great stuff. I love the "glow" toning on that Lucania. "Ancient-bombing" can be a good thing. :)

Hey, did you know that in ancient times, lions were so tame that you could saddle 'em up and ride 'em?* Yep!

(*Well, if you happened to be a goddess who carried thunderbolts, anyway.)

Ancient Roman Empire: silver denarius of Septimius Severus, "Dea Caelestis" type, ca. 193-211 AD

Hey, its a nice day, lets go ride our lions after work!

We'll take some lightning bolts and a six pack of IPA and see what kind of trouble we can get into...

Ha, in the 17th century you would not even need a saddle, just wings. ;)

Those are so cool. I noticed you had "avatarized" it.

Mine should be on its way to NGC soon, since PCGS inexplicably would not grade it. (It is an ineligible type with them, apparently, though they do grade other Sultanate of Rum coins. You'd think they would do this popular type. Oh, well. They did give me a credit when they returned it for "no service". We'll see what NGC says.)

It is the only one I can recall seeing that has that little crescent moon to the left of the sunface. Does anybody know what that's all about? Some kind of mintmark/moneyer's privy mark, etc? Or just random ornamentation? It almost looks like the moon and star on Turkey's modern flag. I suppose that might not be a coincidence. Would love to learn more about that.

And now a lion that comes from the past and the future. :D

Austria issues a €5 New Year's coin every year, but since it is also meant to be a Christmas (season) gift, it always comes a little early. Future? Right, as from 6 December 2017 you can get this coin which is dated 2018.

    at5e18.jpg

But that lion is a beast from the past: It is from the cover page of a 14c evangeliary. That book was completed in 1368, thus 650 years ago. And it is considered to be the starting point of what today is the Austrian National Library ...

More info about the coins here. As usual, there is a surcharged silver version, and a copper piece that can be had at face.

Some lions on coins are not exactly powerful or frightening but cute and/or amusing. :) In 2001, shortly before the euro cash changeover, the Dutch mint issued a special Laatste Gulden coin. This Last Guilder was designed by Tim van Melis, then 12 years old. His lion (taken from the country's CoA but waving a flag instead of holding a sword) won a competition among school children ...

Too playful? OK, here is a big lion. I mean, really big. For the 100th anniversary of the death of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the French mint issued several collector coins featuring the Statue of Liberty (his most famous work). On the other side however you see his portrait and his Lion of Belfort monument. It honors the defenders of the city in the French-Prussian war of 1870-71. That lion is almost 22 meters wide and 11 meters tall. :)
