First Ancient Coin I bought for myself

I have been off and on perusing ancients to see what might call out to me, and today this little one sang its siren song. Which is amazing because who would have thought an elephant could sing???

Perhaps though, I was attracted to it as much for the elephant and the Antiochos VI Dionysos image on the obverse side, as I was because of the bottle cap edge. Pretty darn cool.

Looks like I will be learning about Hellenistic and Syrian coins with this one.

    These are the sellers pics:

Seleukid Kingdom: Antiochos VI Dionysos Serrated Unit

    Antioch Mint 144-142 BC

Obverse: Radiate and diademed head right

Reverse: Elephant advancing left, holding torch in trunk; to right, STA Date above palm frond

I can see how that one might have been singing to you - sweet pick up. You know I used to collect US, but then I bought an ancient . . .

A super first choice, congrats!! The most similar I have is a little Antiochos VIII/Isis headdress bronze:

I'm very low on bottlecaps, but here's a Republican denarius I just picked up.

Denarius 106BC, L. Scipio Asiagenus. Head of Jupiter/Jupiter in quadriga, hurling thunderbolt. (The reverse appears to contain a spelling error: it should be "ASIAG" not "ASAG". Haven't seen one like that before...)

I don't know. There are so many ways to go. Maybe a Phoenecian. Maybe one with a representation of Jupiter on it. I kind of like the Corinth Stater, but they seem too pricy for me when I know nothing about them really.

The reason people give up modern coins for ancients is the group here works like a well oiled cult. They can slowly suck you in, or drag you in quickly - either way, before you know it, the dark side has taken over your life.
