Is there a diagnostic, other than weight, and the R in Pluribus, for the Henning Nickel? I got this nickle in change last week and it has me wondering. I know that he admitted to making 6 pairs of dies.
Henning did make a 1947, and unlike the 1939 and 1944 no P, the R in Pluribus is not damaged. (He also made a 1946 and 1953). Did you check the weight? 5.33 grams. Compare with a Henning 1947 photo provided. I think your strike is too good.
I quite doubt that Ed has any clue about Henning or his shenanigans, and if he does (at some point) it's because he 'Googled' after reading this thread........
Look just to the left of the dome on the Rev; if you find a dot (die chip?) like in the attached, then good chance it is . . . just like the one I think you can find in "Michael K's" photo . . . but not that I can see on your coin . . . Sorry. As a matter of full disclosure: I did NOT know that was the case until I just looked it up a few minutes ago. In fact, until I read this post (and then searched for additional information) I had not a fool's clue of what a "Henning Nickel" was! Semper Fidelis
Henning nickels are not a usual subject for many in numismatics and many people have never heard of them.
I believe the lettering on your coin is too clear. The Henning is noted for mushy lettering. And your rims are in much better shape than the Henning photo. Does it weigh 5.0? Because that would end the guessing.
The coin starting this thread is not a Henning. As stated the letters are too sharp and the fields will be more sandy and have occasional pimples like the 1947 shown in the middle of this thread. I think the 1947 photos were copied from error-ref.com. If so then that is my coin.
