I said "I'd consider...". I apologize for offering a suggestion to someone looking to make his first gold purchase who literally asked if there were other options to a 1/10th ounce gold coin. That was out of line. $190 is nowhere near $140? Okay. You must be a stacker. Who cares if it's less gold content? He said he wanted a gold coin not that he wanted to maximize gold content. I'll be candid, in my opinion a 1/10 ounce bullion coin is about the most boring thing I could ever imagine purchasing. unless you are a stacker and only care about the metal content (if thats the case its still an awful idea too much premium better to save and buy something larger) I absolutely would suggest spending an extra $50 to get a coin you won't get bored of in 30 seconds. Again sorry for offering a suggestion to someone asking for other options on a forum.
Defensive much? You offered him something that costs over 25% more than what he mentioned and that contains less than 50% of the gold.
That is exactly what I did and it was a great suggestion that he'd smart to take into consideration. Not everyone thinks like a stacker. Some people care about historical significance not just the weight of something and if OP is one of those people he has another option. If he said all he cared about was weight I'd not have recommended what I did.
I agree. If the OP doesn't mind foreign coinage, the $2 and $2.50 gold pesos are a cheap way to get some gold.
I'm a stacker but indeed I LOVE the gold dollars from 1849-89. They are small, but very interesting and historical. I would urge you, however if you get one, to get one that is certified. They are counterfeited heavily! Mexican gold is a nice option with smaller premiums to the gold content. But 1/10 Eagles and Maples are nice too. It's something to consider.
