Note the inscription "Kiautschou Gebiet" (K. Territory) by the way. As you wrote, that territory primarily consisted of Tsingtau which today is (central) Qingdao. Back then, Kiautschou (Jiaozhou) was a separate city and, oddly enough, not part of the German territory that used its name. Christian
... and interestingly the German influence there lives on in the production of Tsingtau beer and I believe several German style wines.
Very interesting history lesson, thanks! I think the words Qing Dao mean blue island, and when you get it in China, freshly made and ice cold, it is a really good beer. Most of what is available in the US is already rather old and "skunky". I was supposed to go there once on an old C-5 freighter, but then our orders got changed. I had heard of the German built brewery there and looked forward to visiting it. Guess I should post a coin. Looks like a straight shot from Qing Dao to Papua New Guinea...
Never took a close look at this coin until tonight. Odd. Looks like the "Sea Spirit" is holding a head in it's hands. (I wanted to post a coin from Tuvalu, but as it turns out...I don't have a coin from Tuvalu.) Solomon Islands
