Peeling Silver Dimes?

Anybody ever see peeling silver dimes? These coins were dug, but ive dug a lot of silver dimes in the my many years of metal detecting, and never saw them peel. Any ideas?

Just damage. You will never know exactly what caused it.

 

I'm thinking they are imitation coins. Made to make a Jewelry Bracelet that were linked together. The holes are where they were linked.
