Two kopeks of German occupation of west Russia (Poland, baltics) . Also 1 kopeks and 3 kopeks exist (earlier in this thread). Quite worn out, and as such authentic...
During Germany occupation on world war I, Belgium needed to make emergency coins. This is 50 centimes struck on Gent. Locally called as monnaie de nécessité / noodgeld.
And better picture on Hungarian 1944 2 Pengö coins. Which I suspect, a bit... So stamped first by facist arrow cross party by german influence and the 2nd one by partisans on soviet influence.
When France was occupied by Germany, there was also free France in Equatorial Africa, Francaise Libre. They struck coins to emphasize this, having old France phrases and symbols in contrary to Vichy France symbols. This coin is from 1943.
Well, I kind of disagree. These coins are in prime spot in my occupation coin folder. My interest to occupations is mostly due to seeing marks on power of the country that has occupied another one, how it is visible in the coins. And on the other how the weak position of country occupied is shown. Why these coins were only stamped, and no new mint was used? That is because there was no time to do the actual occupation coin. So arrow cross party (managed by nazis) were stamping coins as well as notes. And then later on communist party repeated the same manoevre. So clearly very much historical relevance on these stampings. So in my categorisation these are occupation coins. Another example of such is war between Germany and France in 1870, where Germans occupied Paris and stamped SEDAN to 2 franc coins.
But these coins were minted by the Hungarian fascist government. Still before the Red Army has exempted Hungary from fascism. But these coins really continued to be in circulation for some time. Best regards. Eugene.
Allied also occupied France as well as Belgium (see above). There was an occupation coin struck in US Philadelphia with value of 2 francs. In contrary to Vichys government we see there the return back to liberte, egalite and fraternite phrase...
Those coins were minted, and started to circulate (mostly in Southern France and French Algeria), in 1945. At the same time, the provisional government - Gouvernement Provisoire de la République Française - started issuing the pre-occupation coins again, also dated 1944. Guess the Philadelphia minted pieces did not use the full country name because these 2 fr coins were minted "for" France, not "by" France ... Christian
And finally Germany was occupied by allied. Swastika was removed from reichsmark's eagles tale. Germany was occupied by allied until 1949 and divided to 4 areas. But at the end relations of allied countries went bad and cold war started... I think we have covered almost all of them now, I think all occupied countries start now to be included to this post for Europe. A few other valuations may still be missing (Poland 1 kopeck 1916, Poland Litzmannstadt Ghetto pfennig etc.) Another story is the ones in Asia and Africa. Should we continue with them in this thread?
Have you considered starting your own thread for those coins rather than hijacking a seven year old thread started by another member?
From my experience it is quite normal that old topics get "revived" at some point, and that they "meander". Eugene started this topic by posting images of and information about German WW1/2 occupation coinage. But if you look at the Belgium piece posted by @Muzyck a few days ago for example, well, that is certainly not German. And posting it here does make sense, as the topic title is quite general ... Since @FinnCoin asked, however, I suggest posting the "European" coins here, and using a different or new topic for Asia and Africa. Christian
It looks just like the European coin in Siberian Man's post #19, so it seemed appropriate. It just seems to me that hijacking a thread is rude and a new one should be started. Of course that it what you also suggested, but of course had to get that dig in.
My apologies if I "hijacked" this thread. This was not my intention and to be honest before today I did not even know what it means. The only reason I signed to this forum was good information available on this thread regarding occupation coins which is my latest coin "passion". There is quite some value if all information is on same thread, as it is easier to find for anyone who is looking more information regarding this topic. This is also original reason I decided to update more information to existing thread and not to start new one. My apologies on potential confusion I have caused to the original intend of this thread, which is clearly pointed our in the first message of it. All my postings sincerely represent my opinion (and it is also backed up by serious research on this area), and I did not have any hidden agenda what so ever....
We are all here to learn and see interesting stuff. The threads sometimes get a bit rowdy, but hardly ever really divisive. Refrain from getting hurt feelings, let a bit slid off and seriously start a different thread, great idea.
