Going through a penny roll at Mom’s tonight and she digs out a small cup of change to look at the cents through a magnifier. Says, “ This penny looks brand new and it’s a 1958-D.” I think “no way” but take a look and sure enough! Then she finds two more! Remembers buying ice cream at the frozen yogurt shop a couple if weeks ago and probably got them there. She gives them to me, they are nicer than any wheatie I have ever found!

I occasionally pull similar condition coins out of all the penny rolls I go through. But 3 in that condition is remarkable!

Three boxes of halves yielded 3 40%ers in the first and then two skunks.

For some reason 82, 83 and 84 pennies have a tendency to bubble up.

1985s also though? Is this a keeper for curiosity? Doubt it has any value.

I've got a bubbled up 1983D in a flip on the wall in my room for no good reason. If I find others in good condition I hang onto them.

This is a way back when story. When I was a young man in my early 20's going to college during 1962 and 1963, I used to hunt regularly through both rolls and vending machine coins for goodies. Remember, this was at the height of the roll and bag boom in US coins.

I used to pull several rolls of 1955D dimes and many P and S mints of the same year out of each dime bag I went through. Also found lots of nice pre 1940 Mercs in high grade, several 1921's and one 1916D. I didn't bother much with quarter and half dollar bags, but nickel bags bought from vending machine companies were very profitable. I put together LOTS of complete roll sets of war nickels, probably a full roll of 1950D's and many nicer grade Buffalos. I flipped what I found to a local dealer in southwest Houston or sold them on a bid board in the Heights area.

Made enough money doing this that I was able to help my Mom out quite a bit on her apartment rent and other expenses!

Between college and doing this I didn't have much time to go out and party with my friends. That was probably a good thing as they were pretty wild.

Now that is a cool story. I would love to hear more stories about CRH back then.

I forgot to mention one thing during that time period. The week I found the 1916-D dime was capped off when I got an AU 1932-S quarter in change at a gas station! Only explanation for this I could ever come up with that it either was a stolen coin from a collection or spent by some kid that raided his dad's coins for some spending money.

If the kid did it, I sure would have hated to be him when his father found out about it later.

2, $500 bags of bank rolled halves from a bank that has never produced a single silver coin for me yielded only 1 stinking beat up NIFC :meh:

    Typical.

My order came in Friday....3rd skunk box out of 3 since I started trying half boxes. I have one more box to pick up today...hope it isn't 4 for 4. I hope all of you are having more success.

I'm trying to come up with a number say, "20" if I get 20 skunks in a row to start out I'll quit. What do you guys think. and stick strictly to dime boxes where I rarely don't pull at least 1.

My longest skunk streak is 16 boxes of halves. Quit for a month after that. Dimes don't yield a lot.

I was able to sell my box of pennies to Trish and was able to buy one at the second bank in town.
So my dreary life isn't quite so dreary.

1 box of halves was a skunk. That's 3 in a row. We all need some luck here. Time to hit the teller trays and CWR when it gets bad.

    $25 CWR Cents: 454 coper cents, plus wheats from 12, 37, 44 (x2), 45 (x2), 50, 51, 52-D, 53, 55 and a 1902 IHC

    $116 CWR Nickels: 42-P, 45-P, and 27 others dated between 39-60

$275 CWR Dimes: 50 Mercs. Yep, a solid roll of them dated between 35 and 45. Could have knocked me over with a feather when they came pouring out.

One of the tellers also handed me a 61 Roosie for stopping by. Not a bad weekend at all. :-D
