I'm speaking of the France 20 Francs silver issue (KM 879) struck for several years in the 1930's. Since some mintages were large, EF examples of this coin are plentiful. BUT, have you ever seen one in gem BU? In all my years dealing in world coins, I've only seen 2 and bought both of them. Look for this coin type the next time you attend a show (they aren't that expensive in Krause) and see if you can find any BU's.
Threads like this can be interesting, especially for those of us not familiar with the addressed coin and/or it's history. Please do consider posting a few photos of your more cherished examples. Welcome to the forum, Reb!
I'd love to post pics of the 2 French 20 Franc coins but I sold them a couple of years ago at a nice profit to a collector who also appreciated the scarcity of this type in BU.
What is considered "modern" in French coinage? I know that their coinage goes back many hundreds of years, but are coins from the 1930's "modern"?
Fairly modern, I think. There is no "official" cutoff date of course, and if you look at the categories at cgb.fr for example (a major coin dealer), the "monnaies modernes" go from 1795 to 2001. Christian
Here's one I picked up recently. And you're right, to find the specific dates in good condition is tough.
