Hello All, No puns or anything today. Just a very nice COS II that I was able to finally purchase after eyeing it for a few months. It is fascinating to read RIC and learn more about each Emperor, in particular the acclamations of someone like Severus. I find it particularly fascinating to read each victory as cause for another acclamation even when Rome is essentially in the middle of a Civil War. I do not know enough about this stuff, but I look forward to learning more. The COS II designation is appropriate from 194 - 201AD as he was elected Consul a 3rd time in 202AD. The IMP XI designation is for his capture of Csetiphon, the Parthian capital in 198AD. The coin itself is dated to 198 - 200AD. I am not quite certain as to why 201AD is not included in that date range, but maybe someone can enlighten me. Look at RIC 503a. Interestingly I just checked the WIldwinds examples for RIC 125 and the attribution is incorrect there too.
@maridvnvm Ugh, thanks. I thought it might be considering he has the "pinchy face" of Laodicea as I call it, but the seller had it marked Rome. And I am not confident enough to just go with what I think right off. So thanks for confirming what I thought I knew. @John Anthony and @Roman Collector Thank you for the compliments. I am trying very hard to purchase coins with full legends and eye appeal and also within budget. I would say of those three qualifications, the last one is the most elastic, but it shouldn't be and my wife appears to be packing a suitcase. Uh oh.
Here is the slightly later COS III P P with the short obverse legend. Obv:– SEVERVS PIVS AVG, Laureate head right Rev:– COS III P P, Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm Minted in Laodicea-ad-Mare, A.D. 202 Ref:– RIC 526
And between yours and mine above Obv:– L SEPT SEV AVG IMP XI PART MAX, Laureate head right Rev:– COS III P P, Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm Minted in Laodicea-ad-Mare, A.D. 198-200 References:– RIC 504 (Scarce), RCV02 6270, RSC 100
@maridvnvm Those are both very nice coins. Wasn't Septimius elected Consul for the third time in 202? Would that make the second COS III issued in 202 as well?
Whist I no longer actively collect these late issues from Laodicea I have obtained quite a few over the years. Here are a few from my dozen or more from the IMP XI PART MAX issue. 511a RIC 512A (scarcer than you would imagine). Last T in RESTITVTOR re-engraved from an O. 519 (also relatively scarce). D of DECENNALIBVS corrected from E
I don't collect them either but my count is smaller. Still, I do have a different trio. IVSTITIA VICT PARTHICAE MARTI VICTORI
