You probably bought the bulk handled half’s, or you got lucky someone was dumb enough to sell a high grade under issue price, Ive also never seen a Carr piece in a segs slab.
I have all the time in the world. If I don't get it, I will live - I'm always finding more than I can afford. These will start showing up as scrap once people give them to heirs willingly or otherwise. I got a 1964-D Moonlight Mint pattern Peace Dollar in scrap.
I got a couple of rolls of silver Kennedys for face value when silver was over $30/oz. Doesn't mean I expect to get more at that price. (Are you sure the 1964-D was a Carr? I don't doubt that an uninformed seller would let one go for scrap, but that's a commonly faked date...)
Yep. It was sold on ebay after it had been filed checking to see if it was silver and went through an oven. It was rough and still brought $60. Dan Carr even called asking where we git it. It was a pattern that was supposed to be scrapped, but whoever got it from him sold it - probably thinking it was a junk Peace dollar worth more than melt.
Cool find. Really cool find. And, to your original point, I imagine there will be an intermittent trickle of heirs, burglars, and disgruntled spouses "disposing" of Carr pieces -- and junk silver, and gem 19th-century US rarities, and everything else. But that doesn't say anything about the overall market trend for those items, or how they will perform decades down the road.
Dan must be cleaning house, picked these last night There were only one left of the Shield and one of the Memorial, 4 of the bulk handed Wheats. these are now all sold out. When they first came out i picked up one high grade 1907 which came back from Anacs a red ms69 and a the 42 steel came back ms69. if i get time i'll post some pic's.
My 1942s (I sent two) just came back from ANACS as MS66 (ouch) and MS68. So I ordered a couple more from Dan, right before they sold out. Just got the grades, haven't received the coins yet. I also snagged a few 70s on some Ameros, will post pics when I receive them
As I recall there was one over-strike "1964-D" Peace that got out by mistake (Die Pair 1 or 2, I don't remember which). It was supposed to be defaced and/or melted but escaped that somehow when it was scrapped. But note that I do have a few of these in my "archives" and they will probably get out some day (but not anytime in the foreseeable future). The different die pairs are shown on this page (Die Pairs 1 and 2 at the bottom): http://www.moonlightmint.com/blog_1.htm
Not just "bare". Actually and totally barren. Or it was. Just added a few new things (Washington over-strikes).
