Found this while searching through pocket change, and at first thought it was post mint, but then thought differently when I looked closer. The indent or mark on the 6, seems to go the whole way around the six, but the six still stands out plain as day. My thought would be if it was post mint, wouldn't the 6 be taken off or indented, not like it is? Can't seem to be getting the words I want out, lol, but I hope the pics will do the talking for me. So all I really want are a few answers. One, is it a mint error and what would terms of value be? And if it isn't a mint error, how would something like this happen? Thanks ahead of time, here are the pics: Phoenix
I can try to get some more pics tomorrow. Can't really get good pics with this camera. But I can try to get better ones. Thanks for the help so far! Phoenix
never seen anything like that, pretty neat!:thumb: i would keep it just becuase its neat. plus its a 1960, the first couple years of the memorial.
Sorry guys for taking so long to get more pics, can't really get decent pics with my camera other than the ones I posted. Will keep trying though, and sorry for the delay! Phoenix
Starting Out Planchet error. The 83 is there without damage. Something happend to the planchet before it went thru the press. I have never seen a coin like this. Good post Rhubarb
Thanks Rhubarb. I liked it when I found it, so I kept it. Took me a few days to find it again after reading this post. I think Phoenix has something like it (from what I think he's trying to say). Hope this helps although I have no clue as to what hit it before the strike and I have no idea as to value - if any.
That's very similiar too mine, thanks StartingOut! Yours is just more impressive than mine. What kind of camera are you using? Nice pics. :thumb: Phoenix
I am leaning towards both coins being "Struck Thru" by a broken head of a Mint Mark Punch! The 1983 Cent definitely appears to have a "D" protruding South from the lower loop of the "8". Frank
Frank, I do see the impression of the D below the 8 appear's to be at a 80 degree angle from the 8. I still think itis a planchet error prior to the Mint stamping the coin. Rhubarb
I love a lively debate. Keep it coming. I hadn't even thought about this coin till Phoenix brought it up. When you figure out what happened to either of these coins, I'd like to know, and I'm sure Phoenix would too.
1960D Lincoln Cent While you guys are waiting for more pics of the coin, I have one that I would like to know about if you don't mind! I also have a 1960D Lincoln Cent, but it has a couple of die breaks on the reverse. I will try to post the pic but in the mean time Copper Coins has a pic of one of the die breaks I'm talking about: http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/1960/1960d1mm027mb.jpg I'm surprised the full picture of the reverse wasen't taken as there's an even larger die break on the 2nd Pillar, and smaller one on the 1st. My question is...what does 1960S-1MM-027: D/D East: MDS mean......?? They're all BU. I have about 10 of these coins. I've never seen this error on Ebay. Thanks in advance Nana
I've been trying, I just can't get good pics of much anything with my camera. It's not really the best in the world. But I'll try experimenting some other things to try to get some better pics. Sorry for the delay guys. Phoenix
The coin on coppercoins your refering to is a D. The reason the extra picture's weren't taken is the die break's on your coin weren't on that one. They are showing marker's to identify the coin on the website. 1960D-Date Minting Facility. 1-Denomination. MM-Mint Mark-where the error is. 027-is the 27 error coin. D/D-Double Die. East-where the error is at in the MM. MDS- Middle Die State. This is what is used to determine what stage the Die is in during it's life of making coins. EDS- Early Die State VEDS-Very Early Die State. MDS Middle Die State. LDS-Late Die State VLDS Very Late Die State. As to your coin's, there very common in the 1960 D series. That is a good year to find different error's. I have roughly 300 just like that. The important thing to remember is that your looking at the MM. The die break's are marker's. I hope this help's. Rhubarb
I don't quite understand. You said the error was in the Mint Mark, but the Die Break is on the top right edge of the second tier of the Memorial on the reverse. I'm sorry, but I'm just not understanding. I wish I had a full picture of this coin! Thanks! Nana
