I bought a tiny scale. (1) I also received a fake Peace Dollar in the mail. The fake Peace Dollar looks all the world like the real thing - I would have happily given full price for it. The scale says it only weights 19.0 grams whereas a real Peace Dollar weighs in at 26.7 grams. I also have another fake that weighs 22.5 grams. The scale is small enough to take to coin shows and runs on batteries. I can see already that it will be worth its weight in silver. 1: I weighed a nickel, it came in at 5.014 grams. 2: I don't know if I can recommend it yet - I really think it is easy (one page of instructions) and it comes with a calibration weight. I cannot speak to its durability because I've only used it a couple of times. I'm very pleased with it; I just haven't used it enough to be recommending it.
That looks like a worthwhile purchase. I'll grab one and then compare it to my other scale. It would be nice to have a relatively inexpensive one to carry to shows, without risking my 'good' one. Amazon should get it to me quickly and can do some side-by-sides.
You might not even need to weigh anything, just pull it out of your pocket and see who starts moving for the exits...
I have one of the pocket scales. I never bothered to take it to a show because it gets knocked out of calibration just from putting it away. But then it's a pretty old scale. Maybe the newer ones stay in calibration better.
I recalibrate mine fairly regularly, though it never seems to have gotten off. If I was making a serious buy and NEEDED the weight it would be worth setting it up and calibrating on the spot. There is one coin I regret not buying at the last Baltimore show I attended and part of the reason was that it was a raw gold coin and even though it's a something I collect, I'd never even seen the denomination in hand before. I couldn't justify the buy of a raw coin without even the weight. If I had my scale I might have gone for it instead of his other coin I wanted.
