I have a few Morgan and Peace dollars that have scotch tape residue across them. The way that came about is when I was a kid the family members used to tape them to cards and give them away as presents.

I know that coins should not be cleaned.
Is there a way to remove the residue without damaging the coin?

Someone suggested to me that Avon Skin So Soft will remove tape residue.
    Think I shoudl try it?

Yes, pure acetone will remove it. There will however be a stripe (for lack of a better word) where the tape was on the coin forever.

Very, very bad idea. Absolutely do not try this.

What GDJMSP said. Pure acetone can be found at most hardware stores.

Don't forget that you should use the acetone in a well ventilated area. With tape residue, you will probably have to change it out several times, and a quick rinse and air dry when the tape is off. Don't rub the coin and don't forget not to put it in plastic, use glass only. :p

No, you will not want to use a nail polish remover as it has some impurities. Unless you don't care much about your coins, you wouldn't want to use nail polish. (else why ask this question on this forum? ;) )

I'm sure those Morgan dollars are worth more than the price of acetone. :)

No, get some shallow glass bowls. Put a 1/2 inch of the pure acetone in the bottom of one. Place the coin in it and let sit there for 30 minutes. Then in a clean glass bowl, place some more clean acetone in it. Dip the coin for 10 seconds or so. Repeat in a 3rd glass bowl. Then rinse with distilled water, several times - then let the coin air dry.

Let me just stress this again.

DON"T RUB THE COIN WITH ANYTHING, not even your finger.
