I just took a little break from work and bid on these two bronzes form the collection of an Austrian scientist this morning. Not spectacular, but just how I like them: reddish copper and yellowish brass, and nice enough to serve as upgrades for my portrait series. To my surprise I won both for less than what would have been my limit. Here are the seller´s pictures: Tiberius As, 14-16 a.D: Livia (?) Dupondius, 22-23 a.D.: I think that the Tiberius has a rather nice portrait and wonder if the lady on the Dupondius really does depict Augustus´wife. Any suggestions?
Very nice!! At the right price, I LOVE adding examples like those---they have eye-appeal, yet look 'ancient' as well.....
I really like that Tiberius! And as for the PIETA dupondius, you ask: Consider Vipsania as a possibility. I posted about this back some months back.
I'm pretty sure the portrait on your dupondius is Livilla, Claudia Livia Julia, who was named after her grandmother, Augusta Livia Drusilla.
Thanks for the suggestion! That would totally make sense. And on the other hand I would have a reason to keep my fair IVSTITIA Dupondius which I intended to replace with this one as a representation of Livia in my gallery . That would be interesting! What exactly makes you sure about that?
For what it's worth, this acsearch link seems to list these as 'Livia'.... https://www.acsearch.info/search.ht...=1&de=1&fr=1&it=1&es=1&ot=1&images=1¤cy
Great coins! The Roman bronze coins are interesting insights into their culture. I bid on a coin in the auction (lot 1159), but do not know the hammer price.
Great coins @Julius Germanicus ! Nice Copper and nice Orichalcum examples! I enjoy bronzes as much as the Silver. I agree with @rrdenarius ... they really offer interesting insights to the culture at that time: RI Tiberius AE As 14-37 CE Laureate-Pont Max Globe Rudder RIC I 58 RI Alexandria Livia, wife Augustus Diobol CE 1-2 Æ 23.5mm 7.46g.
