Picked up my first English hammered coin today, a penny of Edward I. I've always liked this type of coinage, unfortunately I can't afford most of it. I'm still waiting to pick up my first English hammered coin. Actually, I'd prefer a Scottish one 'cause of my roots, but it's all down to what you can afford...
Very nice Edward penny. His coins are exceedingly common, compared to the rest of the Plantegenet dynasty. Keep your eye out, though, for esterling imitations. These were coins of essentially the same design with slightly varied legends, often minted by dukes or bishops and the like in France. Some of them can be quite valuable! Jhonn - keep your eye out for 20 pence of Charles I. These can be had for a reasonable amount. Others, however, are not so cheap. I've seen Robert the Bruce pennies cut in half going for nearly a hundred dollars!
Which is why it fit in my current budget. I'll admit that at this point I know very little about these type of coins, just the very basics. Before I get any more I'd definitely want to do some reading, but at this point it's nice to have an example of this style of coinage. I'd love to be able to afford some nice examples of early Anglo Saxon stuff, but they get really pricey.
Nice coin. How much did it set you back? I picked up one recently but it is nowhere near as nice as this one. I picked it up because Edward I is my 24th great grandfather. Richard
The big, semi-annual Denver Coin Expo is just two weeks away, so I'm hoping I'll be able to find some nice hammered coinage there. We'll see...
If he paid below 200 USD he got a good deal I would say. Its in nice shape, so many of these are so much more worn.
With patience and good sniping, Anglo-Saxon stycas can periodically be had for under 50 dollars on ebay. They generally go for $80-100.
I seldom see ones with a decent portrait like that go for so little, then again I dont shop for these much save on vcoins.
Lovely coin! Coin has beautiful color. What kind of metal is it? How did the metal get to be that color? Who took the photo?
I would say it is the photography setup or photo processing that the dealer uses, as many of his pics have a similar appearance, including bronze coins.
A lot of the pics in my gallery were done by John Lavender for various dealers thus look similar, not sure if he did this one, which I got from Antony Wilson @ York Coins. John does pics for quite a few VCoins dealers as well as private individuals.
I wasn't talking about pics in your gallery looking the same, but rather the coin pictured, which I recognized as a York coins picture. That is why I said the appearance of the coin was due to the way the dealer photographed the coin or edited the picture.
