Yes.. Once it was a normal genuine Cent. From mid-1982 until now, The US Cent has been made on Copper Plated with Zinc Core Planchets. They were made of Copper before 1982. So, Somehow it was discovered that the plating of a Genuine Copper Plated Zinc could be removed. Then they take what is left, the Zinc which still has the original image of the struck Cent and they put enough pressure to elongate it. That's what you see and what we have seen in other threads posted on CoinTalk. I know it's a bit difficult to understand but we see them a lot.
According to the link. The 1974 d that was found was surrendered back to the us mint It didn't look real to me except that its got all the right .markings
Correct. Because it was not authorized to be put into public circulation. The Cent in question on this thread has nothing to do with the 1974 Aluminum! Beacuse it's not Aluminum It's a normal deplated Cent. PMD - Post Mint Damage
Hoo boy, if THIS ever becomes the "standard", we're all scrod. I don't see the point to LOTS of stuff that gets done every day. Heck, I work for a legislature.
The Question Is The 1999 Penny Size Of a Nickel How Much It's The Value ? Are They Selling The 1999 Penny Or will Keep The 1999 Penny Size Of a Nickel ? Sincerely,
It's a damaged penny. Show a photo. This was answered in the other thread. Do not post your e mail here.
The increase in size is not a mint caused difference as the mint makes no dies that size for the cent, so it is either a forgery, or hammered in leather so the details stay somewhat the same. If it weighs the same I would think hammered, if weighed differently than normal a forgery. IMO, Jim
Your penny is a Texas cent. It has been hammered between 2 leather belts, (or something) to increase the size. The plating has been removed and that color you see is zinc. It may not even be worth a penny as no machine will accept it and cashiers may not take it either because there is no way to "cash" it in. It is now just a novelty coin with no value.
Welcome to CoinTalk. The cent you are showing appears to be a copper plated zinc cent (normal cent) which has had the size increased by placing it between two pieces of leather and beating it, and the copper plating has been removed. As to which came first, I don't think can be told, however it is simply a mutilated coin and as such has no value beyond a conversation piece.
