I found a 1999 Aluminium penny the size of a nickel but weighing 2.5. Any ideas on size as well as material stock
Not aluminum. Copper plating removed to expose the Zinc core then smashed between 2 pieces of leather to expand it. We have seen a few on CoinTalk recently. Not a Mint Error. It is 1988
Yeah how does one tell other than having the metal tested. Do u mean it could be a fake. My bad on the year. I also have a 1999 made out of alluminum. What do you mean by texas sent
I think thats what they call it when they alter the coin to make it larger. I think they call it that because of the old saying "everything is bigger in Texas"
Mike.. It's not Aluminum! It's an exposed Damage Cent. As I stated.. we have seen these many times before. What you are seeing is the Zinc without the Copper Plating. It's not a Mint Error. The only year that Cents were made of Aluminum was in 1974 - Here is the information.. I want to share this webpage with you - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1974_aluminum_cent
So even if it is real. I would have to surrender it to the us mint since it was not authorised for circulation
No Someone or some persons figured out how to make this Cent you have found. It was not created at any US Mint. We have seen many before. It's PMD - Post Mint Damage.
I'm confused. @paddyman98 , are you saying this is a 'genuine cent', struck by the mint, that has then been altered? I know nothing of moderns, and about as much about Memorial cents, but that thing doesn't look 'real' to me.
