How do you know it is authentic? Is it in a slab?

Did your Grandfather happen to say how he got this coin?

No he passed away years ago and our family just now got to go through his stuff before they level everything I'm going back to look at little harder before that happens I guarantee it's been in that shop since before I was born I'm 40

I understand, That looks like a severe case of environmental damage

That's what I don't understand it was indoors this whole time but it was in u know those metal ckntsiners with a bunch of small drawers in it? That ud see in a shop it was in that a metal one at that and the coin itself wasn't covered just sitting inside one of the metal drawers

Your coin appears to be heavily corroded. Nobody is stating where that happened, only observing the facts as they are at this time.

Can you post a picture of the reverse side of the coin?

I see you expressed interest in selling it in a different thread. If you are pretty sure it really is an 1877, I'd send it to ANACS for a (low-cost) verification before I tried to sell it. It is in pretty tough shape and the damaged date reduces the value also, but a genuine key date is always worth something...though I won't venture a guess on this one.:)

Can I ask you a question, dav?

Can you actually read the date on your coin? The whole date? Because I have a problem with the 3rd digit and based on the reverse, i’d Say it’s not an 1877

The feathers make me think the coin is 1887 or 1897.
