If you are really interested, pick up the phone and call the mayor, Better Business Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, or something similar (even a gas station will probably work), and ask them how they say Dahlonega. Their opinion counts a lot more than ours.
Last time I checked, Georgia was EAST of the Rockies. As for pronounciation, I always thought (and I think I'm agreeing with some of the previously offered opinions) "Doll - uh - knee - gaa." All of that in a southern drawl, however.
As usual, GDJMSP (what does that stand for, BTW?) is correct...Mike (who spent five years of his life just south of Dahlonega)
Mike, I've always found dialect to be interesting. Do you mean CHicago with a really hard CH? BTW, you're welcome to visit Hobart anytime. You actually already knew how to pronounce it! Gold star and a happy face for you my friend.
"If you are really interested, pick up the phone and call the mayor, Better Business Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, or something similar (even a gas station will probably work), and ask them how they say Dahlonega. Sometimes how the "natives" say it has nothing to do with the correct pronunciation. I was raised in Louisville Ky. Now that city was named after King Louis (I forget which number but I believe it was XIV) of France. Now his name was pronouced Lou - ee. So the name of the city should be Lou-ee-ville. For the longest time though the "native" pronouced it Lou-a-ville. Then along came a popular local evening news personallity who single handedly changed the pronouciation. After several years of exposure to her accented speech, the natives of the city now pronouce it Lou-uh-vulle. (At least we never prounouced it Lou-is-ville. I don't know how we managed to avoid that.)
LOL ! There can be only one ! It's a loooong story, one I have recounted here several times. Let it suffice to say - I just go by Doug
Should we hold a contest? Guess what the heck GDJMSP stands for? I'm thinking the D stands for Doug but knowing you it could be the J.
No need for a contest -- the whole thing is here somewhere on one of the "How did you get you username?" threads. I can't remember them all but I remember "G" is for Gordon.
You're right - it is the J. You could look it up Clembo, I've had to go thru this quite a few times already. You'd only have to search thru 13,000 or so posts But I'll save you the trouble just cause I'm such a nice guy Gordon Douglas John Michael Spencer Prather
