It's probably because it was during the Great Depression, and they had to make the tool steel and dies last as long as possible. Philly probably limited what they were going to get, so you lower the pressure and get out as many as you can.
Wow I posted that over 5 years ago. I should contact Mr. Carr and get reimbursed. I just checked , I bought it 12/14/2010 1:27 PM Die Pair 6 Proof-like Finish 180 (final) $175 (sold out) Produced December, 2010. The reverse die lost some frosting and polish during the first few strikes, and as a result some coins show less cameo contrast on the reverse than the obverse. Die Pair 6 proof-like finish
You are right. I tried to enlarge the picture, but it is a fixed size. He mentions on his website that the counterfeits have a larger D - yours is just clearer. I haven't seen any of his proof-like Peace Dollars look as cameoed as yours on the obverse, and the clear D on the reverse made me think it wasn't correct. Sorry for doubting, but there are lots of people trying to ride on his coat tails on eBay, even making copies of the papers he includes with his coins. Very nice coin. I am a big fan of what he does, though there are some that think he is the devil incarnate and the world's biggest counterfeiter. He knows where the line is, and he does his best to stay away from it.
I am with you. I picked this up at auction a couple years ago and paid full retail on it. I am still hunting for an upgrade, but dread the day I find it.
Won this last night. It was a eBay auction with a lot of dreck and widgets. It was amusing watching the bids on some of the stuff. I like stickered dollars so here it is. There were silver dollars in all kinds of basement slabs going for moon money this one was under $20 + 22% juice.
Actually, it is. And one of the last "1964-D" Peace over-strikes that I produced. The polished fields and lighting angle make the mint mark appear to stand out more than normal.
Sorry Bill, just can't get past the black spots. Looks like one or two are deep enough to eat into the surface. I wish you luck with the submission. Please let me know if it straight grades. I'm keenly interested in knowing the result.
