I have been working on a site about the quadrans denomination of Roman imperial coins. Here it is: http://augustuscoins.com/ed/quadrans/ Note there is a page of reference books, articles, and catalogs for those of you who want to know more. The lead coin on the page is this one: It is "anonymous" and might really be a semis, but it is usually called a quadrans. 18 mm. Helmeted bust of Mars right cuirass, S C on either side RIC II page 218, 19. Undated, but probably early - mid second century AD. If you notice any typos, or errors, or have suggestions, please PM me. I want to make the page better. We had a thread on quadrantes before: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/anonymous-quadrans-minerva-and-owl.303496/#post-2864143 If you have quadrantes to show, show them here!
Very informative page, as always, @Valentinian ! Thanks so much for your contributions to the hobby! Here's a quadrans of Claudius: Claudius, AD 41-54 Roman Æ quadrans; 3.95 gm; 15.1 mm Rome mint, AD 41 Obv: TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG, modius Rev: PON M TR P IMP COS DES IT around large SC Refs: BMCRE 179; RIC 84; Cohen 70; RCV 1863.
That's a great coin Valentinian, fantastic detail. I only have one, a Claudius scales type, one of my very early buys.
Thanks @Valentinian for the page reference! That is a GORGEOUS Qudrans. I have a few from the Republic Era, but this one really strikes home when you talk about inflation... Roman Republic Aes Grave AE Quadrans 59.8g 230 BCE Dog 3 pellets Six spoked wheel Craw 26-6a Th-Vecchi 34
No it will not. I store my Roman Republic Aes Graves, Big Ptolemies, and my Carthage 15-Shekels (over 102 grams) in a separate box.
Love the coin you posted @Valentinian I'll read the site later but I'm sure it will be very interesting.
Very nice quadrans. I had a semis of Trajan featuring Trajan's column on the reverse but that was part of my original collection that I sold years ago.
That quadrans is fantastic @Valentinian. I only have the one and it's the same type as the first on your page.
I don't usually have many early Imperial, but did get this one in a group. celebrating victories in the Jewish-Roman War- Vespasian A.D. 72-73 Ӕ Quadrans 15mm 2.0gm IMP VESPASIAN AVG; palm tree, Reverse: P M TR P P P COS IIII; vexillum with 3 phalerae, S-C across fields. RIC II Rome 408
