So I was closely watching a coin that has been at the very top of my want list for a long time. So much so that I had a section of my coin budget set aside not to be used until just the right example came up. Well I found that example and with about a minute remaining I put in what I thought was a solid bid. Nope... not enough... Hmm. Come on Curtisimo you can go a bit more you cheapo... fine I'll hit the little refresh button and try again... What?! Why are you taking so long to load? Dang the bidding has closed. 'My heart drops'... Then I see who won the auction. CLIO!! Okay it's no big deal I wasn't going to win anyway. At least the coin will have other neat coins to play with in its new home. Here's the one that got away. I am not fairing very well in my bidding as of late I believe I was the under-bidder or bid the same as the under-bidder. Now at least Clio already has one of these the next time a good one comes around. You will be mine yet you wily Satrap! Please commiserate with me my friends... I'm just so sad Help me feel better by showing me your favorite electrum coins!
Clio must have a warehouse for all his coins, and the tears of all the collectors he has outbid must be enough to fill Lake Ontario.
Indeed but I would almost rather lose a coin to Clio than to anyone else. At least now I know my bid fumble didn't really make a difference. If Clio would just join CT so we could visit our losses through his/her posts that would be just fantastic.
Has anyone ever tried to figure out who Clio is? I see his name come up here often and have read what he does in auctions. Im all for respecting somone's privacy but with their supposed wealth, they should have some sort of digital footprint. Maybe they are somone well known by their real name? Maybe a numismatic author? I dont know, Im just curious by the mystery. Does anyone know if any of the coins Clio has won have come back to market?
I keep pictures of most of the RR coins that surface on the public market in my photofile and note every single one I bid on and lost and who won them and I have yet to see any of the Clio coins come back on the market. If his RR bronze collection alone was sold it would be a pretty magnificent sale with lots of interesting rarities. This year alone I've been outbid by Clio on more RR bronzes than coins I've actually purchased in bronze and silver combined throughout the year.
@Curtisimo I know the feeling well. My favourite electrum is my avatar. MYSIA Kyzikos c.600-550 B.C. Electrum (6 mm, 0.50 gm. Head of Tunny right / Quadripartite incuse square. Hunter & Liewald 2.2; cf Von Fritze l 9 (twelfth stater); SNG France - ; Rosen 419 VF
Curtisimo, I too was Clio'd this morning, on a Sicilian AE after being the high bidder on that coin for 13 days. Clio mysteriously appeared sometime between walking into a bagel shop on my way to work and getting my bagel about 2 minutes later. Oh well, there will always be another...
I forgot the entire auction! As for Clio, well, if he wanted to write sniping software for CNG he could do it, or have someone else do it for him.
This may be sacrilegious, but what with Clio and the new exorbitant shipping to Canada, I usually skip CNG auctions as not worth my while... Here's my newest electrum. After @Ken Dorney (I think?) said we'd better pick up our electrum hektes soon before the hoard(s) are gone, I put these higher on the list. LESBOS. Mytilene. EL Hekte (Circa 454-428/7 BC? others say ). Obv: Helmeted head of Athena right. Rev: Confronted heads of steers within incuse square. 10 mm, 2.51 g.
My only Electrum. My others are AU. Sorry that I just posted it in @AncientJoe 's thread: Carthage Zeugitana 350-270 BCE EL Dekadrachm-Stater 18.5mm 7.27g Tanit Horse 3 pellets in ex MAA 10 SNG COP137 SNG Sicily 975 I really do not care about Clio or being Clio'd. Bidding and the market price is what it is. What I win, I have. What I lose in a bid, is the money I have for another selection, whether it is an Auction or negotiating with a Seller. Many times my paid price can be MUCH lower than what was bid/won in an auction. I figger, if I WANT it, I will set a bid or negotiated price to GET it. I don't NEED it, so I am not out what I cannot afford...
That's one of my favorite of yours Brian. Also for the record I agree with you and I don't begrudge Clio any of the coins I lose to him. He's the man/woman and has great taste in coins. I'm just very sad to not have that coin in my collection because it totally rocks!
I've never bid in a CNG auction...but I bet if Clio did post here, Clio may enjoy the coin company and having something to contribute to every thread/pile on. Cheers to you Clio, who ever you are!
I agree 100%. I only lost one to him today which makes me wonder what was wrong with the others I bid on and lost to someone else or the one I won.
I got massively outbid on a large number of coins yesterday, all of which stretched well above their (low-ball) 'estimates' and into territory where I think "good luck to the successful bidder, if you really want to pay that much". I do not know if that Clio person was one of the bidders but if so, good luck to him / her. @dougsmit I won one sestertius at well below the estimate and its prior auction sales value. Like you I am now questioning - what is wrong with this coin! Peter
