Here is a Geta I acquired which is not going to be staying in my collection, as it's going out to someone in this forum whom I won't disclose. I'm sure I'll see it in a future thread, but I can't help myself and I want to share it now with all of you. The obverse bust is a beauty. The reverse is not as impressive as the obverse (though I think Providentia it is a decent Providentia), but I think the sweet obverse portrait of Geta more than makes up for the slight strike weakness on the reverse and makes this coin a sweet example of a Geta Denarius. By the way, here is my Geta from my personal collection. I will probably be sharing a few more temporary coins soon, as I hope to be able to surprise a few individuals with Christmas gifts. They won't know they're getting coins until they see them in the mail before the end of year though, so I won't be disclosing any recipient names in any "temporary coin" threads I share.
Nice. I'm all too well familiar with the concept of "temporary" coins - perhaps more than most collectors, with my "Eclectic Box" being such a revolving thing over months and years. (Really, in a human collector's lifespan, they're all temporary, aren't they? Actually, WE are the temporary thing, if you think about it. But I wax too philosophical, maybe.) Is this "secret Santa" stuff? I need to get in on that this year. Missed the boat last year.
If you want to get technical, no coin is temporary, since metal lasts hundreds or even thousands of years, while most of us won't last a century. Aah, the egocentrism of the human mind.
Both lovely coins! The recipient of that gift will be a happy collector indeed! Here's one of my Geta as a kiddo coins: Geta as Caesar, AD 198-209 Roman AR denarius; 3.24 gm, 18.3 mm Rome, AD 202 Obv: P SEPT GETA CAES PONT, bare-headed and draped bust, right Rev: SECVRIT IMPERII, Securitas enthroned left, hoding globe Refs: RIC-20; BMC-240; Cohen-183; Sear-7200; Hill-553.
Nice youthful portrait, someone is going to be happy for sure. I thought I may have had something already but started shopping some yesterday, but notta, will be spending extra time coin searching for sure. I myself am trying to figure how I'm going to keep the "secret" part of the idea. I correspond with my giftee from time to time and she/he knows my address as I know his/hers and knows my full name. Maybe I can use an out of state friends return address on the package. Any ideas? Here is a cool hybrid, Geta I bought from JA that is an ex Doug Smith Geta, AD 209-211 Hybrid denarius (AR; 18-19mm; 2.68g; 6h) Obv.: P SEPT GETA PIVS AVG BRIT; Laureate head of Geta to right. Yeah, I am sending the Geta to someone, someone else is getting a Valentinian I from me, someone else is getting an Indian coin, and I'm sending another person a Tacitus. I'm even thinking about sending some of the coins JA has on consignment for me that haven't sold to other members here as gifts. I don't have the resources to gift something to every single person here, but I made it my goal to gift coins to as many newbies as I can.
Well hey, I'm a newbie only been collecting ancients for about a year and eight or nine months . Seriously that'sgreat @Sallent you and many members here are so giving. Someday I'll join the giving, I just get so attached to the coins I have. I have donated some of my moderns from the old days does that count?
You know, I do miss some of my modern coins a little. As pretty as ancients are, one can't deny that Morgan dollars, Peace Dollars and Walking Liberty half Dollars have a certain charm.
True I think the only ones I hang on to or add on occasion are the ASE, Walking Libs and war nickels.
I am more the AGE’s, Buffalos, and Krugers guy... I like the charm and heavy output of Neutron Star collisions...
Great coins and an amazing deed your doing for the community. Yes, that counts. Ask me how I know . Thanks, Jacob
I haven't heard of a hybrid denarius--is that another term for a limes denarius? And great OP coin--the hair and eye particularly.
Great coin Sallent! I do not own any Getas to post so I will sit on the bench for this one. It is both generous and kind of you to part with coins in your collection to give to others. I am sure that the newbies will appreciate it. Peter
