I'm usually very careful and conservative with my coin purchases, especially on Ebay. But this morning, in a moment of weakness, I turned casino gambler and impulsively bought a lot of 16 crusty Romans. Both sides of the coins were not even pictured! I know this was probably very foolish, but how foolish was I? I paid 54. smackers. I am an experienced coin cleaner and enjoy the process and understand the risks.

Geez! I've got some "crusties" that were given to me by someone else. I don't know what they are because I don't collect them, but I would have happily given them to you for free just so you'd have something to keep you busy.

By the way, in 12+ years of playing the max bet on multiline video slots in Vegas and Reno, I've never considered it gambling. I've always come home ahead of the game!

It looks like some of them will clean up nicely and that some are early imperials - keepers and not just tiny late Roman coins.

Sometimes rolling the dice, when the cost isn't crazy, is a really fun part of life. People with a lot more experience in coins can say whether you lost money. I think it's cool that you took a chance.

What fun is there in always playing by the book?

I'm looking forward to seeing the cleaning process and the end result!

@Bing: Cleaning can be slow, but I promise to post results. Good or bad.

Looks like they are as/dupondius size. I think the Herennia Etruscilla, Trajan, and Hadrian ones will clean up quite nicely. You did well!

I think you did alright. With a lot like this half the fun is cleaning anyway.

I'm a bottom-feeder, but I'd be pretty excited about these... it looks like a lot of fun.

Augustus through Severus Alexander mostly. Some Ptolemaic. Odds and ends.

Looks like a very good buy.
I haven’t seen uncleaned early imperials for years. I remember when they were more abundant. Much more exciting than the dreary 4th century uncleaned LRBs.

That's a promising looking group, post your results when you get them cleaned up!

Jackpot! Looks like you'll need to break out the electrolysis kit for some of them, but I'd be thrilled to get a batch like that for $54. Who was the seller (or are you keeping this a secret)?
