    Yes, it is and it looks to be in pretty good condition for being a circulation find from 1996.

    While these coins have technically been demonetized, this just means merchants will no longer accept them but they should officially retain their value "for all time" and will be exchangeable at a number of financial institutions/redemption centers in the UK.

    From what I have read, you cannot exchange them in the sense of getting a new pound coin for an old one. But banks accept them, so you should have a UK bank account or maybe use an exchange service that does the job for you ...

    Heck I live in the sticks in NY, I guess I will throw it in the grandchildren Pile. I wonder if that is why someone dumped it thought it was worthless.

    Probably so. If one does not collect such coins, there is not much you can do with them. Maybe a donation box at an airport or a church ...
